Fee for VRT or just price?

    Used the VRT calculator for the new car we just bought, nice and cheap but we were wondering a few other things that the site isn't very clear on:

    1. Do we need to pay a fee for having this done, other than the actual price of the VRT?
    2. Do we need to book an NCT straight away?
    3. How much are the plates usually?
    4. Do we need to put tax on the car straight away and if yes is there any rules on for how long this first tax should be?

    1= no
    2=yes
    3=about 20 euro for two in a motor factor
    4=yes ."any rules on for how long this first tax should be?" 3 month is the minimum you can tax any car

    On four, I did know that, I just wasn't sure if perhaps they expected you to tax it for the year. But thanks on the rest!

    In relation to 2.
    You need NCT on vehicles which are over 4 years old. So if your vehicle at date of VRTing is 4 years old or older, then legally you need valid NCT to drive it on the road.
    No one requires you to book NCT straight away. You can do it anytime you wish (and the earliest is usually few days or even a week after VRTing when your vehicle details appear in NCT database), but before you have valid NCT, you are not legal on the road. Considering current NCT waiting times of few weeks at least, you are forced to either not drive your vehicle for those few weeks after registering, or drive it illegally hoping for the best.

    In relation to 4, as you already know you can tax it either for 3, 6 or 12 months.
    I don't think there is any time limit to do it. So f.e. you could VRT the car, but if you don't intent to drive it, you probably could wait with taxing it for few months or something before you will need it, but I'm really just guessing here.
