Can I laminate the back of my driving license?

It's in bits. The front with my info is okay, but the back has seen better days. Am I allowed to laminate the back to protect it from further wear and tear? It's kept in a driving license holder, but I've had to take it out a few times.

Why bother when you could just apply for the new credit card one.

Most likely because the credit card one costs €55?

How would that stop some one from getting it if their old one is falling to pieces.

Looks more easy to lose, so not going to go for it. The license should be okay for another while, but wanted to check of there was a way I could keep it in good condition longer.

I laminated my whole licence years ago and it keeps it in perfect condition.

I did get a "what did you do to this?" from a Guard once though when I had to produce it at the station. "I laminated it" ses I. "Are you sure its not fake?" he says! Young Guard, probably never seen one before. Tis a grand job OP, go for it.

Would be my first reaction also! Lamenating it would make it look like you opened it up to replace the picture or whatever and needed to reseal it again.

Sellotape it? I'm sure the guards have seen that on many occasions.

Do you not have to keep it bare for future endorsements to be put on it, if any?

...there is a driving licence number on it: if they're so concerned he could just type that into Pulse and check it............it's not rocket science......

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Laminate it and go in to a Garda station and go up to the desk
"Hi, does this licence look fake to you?"
    "No, it looks fine"
    "Great, thanks, bye"
and leg it out the door :D

I did this and a guard told me to apply for a new one that it wasn't valid! Probably just the guy I got on the day.

Its their own fault for issuing such stupid licences anyway. Too big and made of bloody cardboard FFS!

Is there any other Country in Europe (or anywhere else) which such weird looking licences?

€35 for a replacement. Had nearly five years left on my raggy one so got it changed. Huge improvement.

Most European countries if not all did before bringing in Credit Card style ones. Ireland just happens to be one of the last to implement new legislation.

There are plenty of people in the UK still carrying paper ones despite CC ones being issued for about the last 10 years, as they are valid till you are about 70.

The French one is near identical to the paper Irish ones.

When I reapplied for my 2nd 10 year license, the old one was in bits.
I brought it in to the Smithfield motor tax office in person and they wouldn't accept it.
I had to go to Bridewell Garda station to declare it as destroyed or the like, then come back with a form to them.

There are still people in the UK with the even older style licence, with no picture on it

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

If you have a change of address they will do the replacement for free. Just in case you are living in student accommodation etc. ;)

    They're a bitch.

Does anyone know is there any easy way to carry them with you?

You cant put them into your wallet with the protective pouch it came in. Its too bulky.

Read a tip that you can put it into a bank money bag to protect it but putting it into the wallet puts a fold into it.

Its 5 and a half years old and still looking good. So maybe 4 and a half years of a fold in the license wont be too bad.

To be fair though, the Paper ones are pretty shocking. I carried mine, in its protective cover, in a wide jacket pocket for a few hours, and it came out creased in places.

Looking forward to a CC one when I eventually change address in the next few months.

Ditch the cover it comes with. Fold it origami-style.

I have mine folded to about 3" x 2" and it is in perfect condition after nearly 10 years. You should see the Garda's face when he/she sees me taking it out and unfolding it! :)

My old one was still in the envelope it arrived in the post in when it expired this year! Only had it about 6 years as it was a replacement one after the original ended up in the washing machine!!
