Darn, darn, darn, darn and darn :(

Will I try and sell mine now for €200 - only 2 weeks only, hardly used, perfect condition :)

New one is a lot faster iba.

Starting to appear on one or two sites.

    The SE version is €209 (1 DVB-S2 & 1 DVB-T). The UE (colour OLED version) version is €239 (1 DVB-S2 & 1 DVB-T)

You are the bearer of good news aren't you :)

That link did not open for me.

Still trying to get my head around this box and the Vix image and all the technical words. Not that easy for me eventhough GBCullen has been a great help. Even reading the forums/threads in WoS is not that easy.

Did you know that the Gigablue instruction manual does not come in English; just German :(

But at least I have the Sats tuned in and I have been experimenting with the different built in channel lists and I can watch everything I want.

Yeah.... sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The Quad is even faster again @1.3G and start at €260.

    Vix is simple enough.

For Linux box you will also need.

Filezilla Great for connecting to your box and editing the files etc.
Dreamset This allows you to pick whatever satellites you want and it will download the channels off the net for you. You can edit it and reorder and add favourites list, save as Enigma 2 lamedb (master on your PC) and then send it to your box over your wifi.

Everything else can be downloaded by connecting a ethernet cable to your router or USB Wifi.

Ask away. I have a VU+, same idea. Getting one of these new Gigablues though.

    Thanks STB

I'm looking to get a twin tuner satellite receiver and one of these looks like a good option.
I currently have a GM Triplex but the HD picture quality in E2 is very disappointing,it doesnt do my 50" plasma justice .

Thinking of a Giga 800 UE or UE Plus ,Quad or a Vu+ Solo 2 .
Has to be twin sat tuner, run E2 well and have good picture quality and .....be as cheap as possible .

I have the Gigablue Quad with 3 sat tuners and a DVB-T tuner. I put a 1GB 2.5" Samsung drive in it. Its a great unit, very fast and very stable. Using VIX latest versions and its very well supported with new releases every week.

I have previously owned AZBox, Vu+ Duo and Vu+ Ultimo and this is the best value of the four and of equal quality with Vu+ units in my view. CrossEPG works fine out of the box in VIX 3. Picture quality equal to Vu+ units.

    Nice extras
    - the remote is excellent (have to use it lately as one of the kids lost my harmony somewhere in house  )
    - the LCD on front of box shows the Enigma channel picon in colour

PQ is excellent, crossepg is working fine with no issues, that's a great price from a reputable dealer.

Thanks for the feedback guys, looks like a great receiver.
I have fixed the picture quality issue on my Triplex though so I will probably hold onto that for the time being but will keep the Quad in mind for an upgrade .

Just be careful when buying these.

There are 2 versions of the UE/SE's. One is the original with a 333MHZ CPU. The Plus range has a CPU more than twice as powerful 751MHZ.

The there is the Quad which is lightening fast @ 1.3GHZ.

A word of advice when buying from the german sites. The Quad for example, the spec may seem to indicate that what you are buying is 2 x dvb-s and 2 x dvb-t. This is simply a listing of its optimal capabilities. It is not a listing of what they are selling. Most of the simple configurations are 2 x dvb-s (everything else is optional) like in Zardoz's link.

Finally Vix/OpenPLI is not yet available for the Plus range. I don't know why that is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭stanley1

Bought mine from a German site, 2 x dvb-s2 was standard issue.

its a pity about the amount of ram and also tuners.
Especially when ram is do cheap.
I have the quad and 800ue, great receivers and never had a problem with them but I think gigablue could have done more here.
Also open mips images are as good as any other images out there.
Believe me I have tried loads.

The Plus range is only just released so whilst it has superior hardware I would suspect the software side would be at a less advanced stage than on the non Plus receivers .
Thats the problem with buying a newly released Linux receiver ,the Enigma 2 images are usually buggy and need 6 months of development to iron the bugs out.

Can't you just plug in the Arial to the tv then otherwise get a dvb t tuner in the box

no problem getting saorview on the boxes as long as you a dvb-t tuner installed as iba said, I have the tuner installed on the quad and also the alien and work perfectly.

Well I was wrong about that. Something that doesnt seem to be publicised at present is that the UE+ SE+ take Openvix 3.0.

The UE+ Combo is £189 plus free delivery to NI from WOS. Preinstalled with Vix. Needless to say, I got one. :)

4 months later and no Vix for the Plus range despite being sold initially as such. OpenATV is available though. Takes a bit of getting used to but works fine pluginwise etc.

You will have to stick it on a USB stick and flash it that way.

Having used Vix on the Vu+ Solo I found it extremely overrated.

    Folks,

Just got my Gigablue 800se Plus box from germany - took me over an hour to change the language to English confused1.gif BTW I waited for WOS to get them in stock but was just too impatient to wait any longer.

It didn't have 28.2 listed in the satellites .. so I downloaded a (28.2) satellites.xml file from internet and copied it to var/etc folder and restarted the box - no luck. I then used whatever facilities I spotted on the box (plugin or ?) to include 28.2 in the list of satellites, box tried to save the updated satellites.xml file but gave an error on attempting to save. Have I screwed up!! Should the sats.xml file be placed in a different folder (I've since seen threads mentioning /etc/tuxbox)? Hopefully you can help.

Assuming I can get sorted on the sats.xml front, can you also advise me on getting a good sky bouquet?

Update - I read on another forum that the sats.xml should be placed in \etc\enigma2 folder which overrides the file in the etc\tuxbox folder

    Cheers,

    Michael

Maybe you might benefit from putting an image on the box like Vix or Blackhole. Then you can just upload as a plugin a good sky bouquet

I'd consider moving to OpenATV just to get STB support :)

I am new too and STB has taught me so much.

Flashing is not hard though. You just put the image on a memory stick. Turn off receiver. Plug in memory stick and when the receiver boots the option to install from memory stick will appear.

Check these links out, they might help:

I'm sure STB will be around at some time and guide you precisely.

Lads for Gigablues i can only recommend an Openatv image. After some teething problems with the UE Plus they seem to have everything now running grand. Have a Quad and UE Plus here in the house both with the openatv image and I wouldnt change anything (at the moment) for the world.
Flashing is easy, full image backup works find on internal or external HDD, XMLTV-Importer works great for Sky Epg......and most importantly even though its a German forum/image they are very happy to help you when you have problems and welcome English posts.

    Vix is sooooooooo much better.

    I have been converted.

@STB - I'm tempted to invest in a Gigablue quad, but would like some advice. Background first - I have a Freesat Foxsat HD box for years now with the firmware mods for the webinterface, FTP, twonky, channel editor etc. This handles the standard sat TV viewing/recording for myself and SWMBO. Separately I have a media PC with a DVB-T usb stick which handles the terrestrial side of things and runs openelec/xbmc which handles terrestrial recording and most importantly (for me), my CD/SACD/DVD-audio recordings, many of which are multichannel lossless (5.1 PCM audio from FLAC files) into my AV amp. I can also stream extra satellite channels from another PC connected to a motorised dish through this media PC as needed.

Ideally, I would like to combine my terrestrial and main satellite into one box which would have on-board HDD and which would have a good EPG. Again, ideally, it should have SCART output as well as HDMI as mostly SWMBO prefers to just switch on the TV and the sat box and not have to faff about with the AV amp etc. I think this cuts out the Gigablue as it doen't seem to have SCART. I'm not sure if the Amiko Alien2 would be a better choice or whether I would need to spend a lot more and go for the VU+duo2 ? I've no issue with playing with linux boxes and my main PC is running ubuntu so I am familiar with the environment, but once the box is installed it needs to be wife-friendly!

What suggestions for further research on my part?

On the Gigablue.de website they're saying that the DVB-T2 tuner is now available.

    I can't find a price anywhere.

Has anyone tried it out yet?

Why not use a Scart to HDMI adapter, quite a few options on e.g. Amazon but I've no personal experience with them.

No matter what Enigma box you are thinking of buying they will all have the same wife patience issue at start up - if switched on from cold boot. They are not immediate (like a Foxsat/Ferguson). There is a boot time which can be up to 2 mins - on a QUAD this may be less as they have a 1.3g processor. Either way all these E2 boxes they do have HDMI CEC which you can set to switch to a certain port at switch on, so no faffing about with your TV's remote.

The Amiko Alien 2 does have a Scart connection, but they do not run true E2 images, the run hacked versions of E2 images. A lot of stuff is still not available for them as E2 is written for Broadcom chipsets. The Amiko's use STi chips. There userbase is growing, but its still a betamax vs VHS scenario. My advice, they are cheap but that is all. They also only have 3 tuners.

The Gigablue QUAD can have 2 dvb-t and 2 dvb-s2 tuners. I dont have one. I have the 800UE+ which is a DVB-T/DVB-S combo which runs at half the procesing power of the QUAD but is still a lot faster than my VU+Uno. The software is much the same. Once E2 image is configured its walk away (if you want to :)). The type setup you have with your media server etc would be accesible through the box - they run lots of nice plugins.

For more info on the QUAD ask Slegs as he has one (thread on them)

Compared with Vu+ gear the gigablues are fairly priced for the hardware that is in them (more for your buck). They also run the same type E2 images (although are not interchangeable). The Final key to the Gigablues is the support team. A lot of the Gigablue gear is German based support and images - ATV/Openmips. Vix on WOS may be supporting them, but it took them 4 months to release an image for the SE+/UE+ range.

Infact, if you wait til next month there is a new version of the QUAD coming out called the QUAD plus which is a lot of processing power and 1gig lan. The remote can also control your A/V. Again check that the likes of Vix will be supporting them.

New Gigablue Quad Plus - due out in April 2014
