Your 1c and 2c coins are not welcome in Wexford Town

Shoppers in Wexford Town will stop using one and two cent coins from today, in a trial that could see them removed from circulation nationwide.

The two-month-long ‘Rounding Trial’, run by the Central Bank, plans to assess the reaction of both consumers and retailers once the coin experiment comes to an end.

The Government will have the final say on whether the scheme will be taken any further.

    Link

So if you're buying something for €1.26 it gets rounded down to €1.25 and something for €1.29 will now cost €1.30. I think rounding is pretty silly. 1c and 2c should be removed fully and shops should be banned for selling products that would require the use of such coins. The idea to remove them is a good one but the way its being put into practice in Wexford Town is wrong. 1c and 2c coins are a nuisance to business and customers and it's estimated that the majority of 1c and 2c coins spend the majority of their use in jars and not actually in circulation.

Something for €9.99 is psychological pricing. The cost to produce a 1c coin is 1.07c and the cost to produce a 2c coin is over 2c too. So what do you say AH; Ban these dammed coins?

But... €9.99 looks so much more cheaper than €10! :(

So selling product by weight should be banned then, seeing as Bananas at €1.20 a kg is 80% of the time not going to come to a figure ending in 5 or 0.

Especially considering that Mary only ever has 9.60 or something like that and has to give in and use the ten euro note anyway.

    I would have though 1.26 + 1.27 are now 1.25. And 1.28 and 1.29 are now 1.30. No?

so no one here sees this as an opportunity for businesses to round most things up...bringin up the cost of everyones weekly shoppin...which in turn will make others bring up their costs to cover that cost...ya know...that thing called "inflation"....

does anyone here remember the euro changeover where the govt promised that the changeover wouldnt result in higher prices...but in reality most things did go up shortly afterwards ..things ended up costing alot more as businesses saw the opportunity to fool the consumer...and the same will happen here..greedy irish:mad:

What the hell do you think the shops would do if you stopped them selling stuff at certain prices ?? They'd round everything up !!

Ok so what happens is the price in the shop stays the same i.e your biscuits are still 1.26 or 1.28 and when you get to the till the TOTAL price of all your shopping is rounded. Not the individual price so at most the cost to the consumer is a 2 c loss or a 2 c profit.

As in your total bill for all your shopping is 109.87 becomes 109.85 or in the swedish case if you pay by credit card its still 109.87

when rounded up the major stores are donating the amount to charity - so mot a conspiracy to rip the good folk of Wexford off,

loads of European country's do this already

the Irony is that we get one of the country's who has banned 1 and 2 cent coins to mint ours , at a loss.

i was listening to the radio today , they were interviewing some old bint who was "outraged" that they might be taking one cent off her , she exclaimed that " they all add up , 5c is a LOT of money " FFS !!!

as usual the Irish will have to be dragged kicking and screaming , while reciting a hundred decades of the rosary , and screaming for justice for the little ones , just because a GOOD idea from somewhere "foreign" is introduced.

well obviously other people on boards agree with me then that we need to protest and demand a fairer system than we currently have!!we need to fight this govt to avoid gettin continually screwed!

anyways i hope any system that is forced on us is proper and enforced better than the banks were here by the current and last few financial regulators! :D:D

I don't know, I've never been all that inconvenienced by the 1c and 2c. I never really use them but they can give me a nice few euro in savings at the end of the year.

As this initiative is coming from banks I don't trust it. While one or two cent isn't much to us it could work out to hundreds of thousands for them. I think they'll just suck up the value of those coins for their own profiteering.

You can bring to a Eurospar i know, where they just don't give you change if it's less than 10cents.
I have stood there waiting for 2c on the odd occasion, to put in the poor box, just so they don't keep it. They pretend they didn't realise.

More often than not, i'm in a hurry, and i use it because it's on my way, no choice. They always try to keep it.

What's the point of the shop marking something as 1.26 if they know the person will only be charged 1.25? Just mark it as 1.25 and keep it simple.

Few transactions are single item transactions. It's the cumulative bill which would be adjusted.
