Laptop for poker software, software development, college and browsing?

    Hello, I am in first year college and have no clue as to best quality/value on current market.
    I want to; download 3 poker software programs as i play a lot, download various software dev. programs as comp sci. is one of my subjects and be able to browse the internet with ease also.

    Can anyone point me in the right direction as the market seems overwhelming with each brand seemingly offering the best features.

    I had emachines windows 7 before and loved it, should i get windows 8 this time around?
