Does anyone know how much it is to get a body home from the UK to ireland. Family member just died and his final wishes was to be buried with his mother and father but theres talk of getting him crimated instead but thought id post a thread here to get some sort of numbers for us to look at.

Contact the Embassy. They'll know how to go about this.

Condolences, but on After Hours you may get some gallows humour jokes. You could ask the undertakers about such services

Would and Irish Undertaker not collect the remains from the UK?

    Condolences btw.

I'm not trying to be smart but have you considered renting or borrowing a van and doing it yourself. Just make you get the death cert before you leave. So you don't end up with an awkward conversation in Dublin port on why do you have a dead body in your van of a mid 80s women

Would consider this if its legal. The family cant really afford to bring the body home but it was his wishes and was even saying this just a few weeks ago.

I can't see how it wouldn't be legal. There is the problem of some overzealous customs official demanding the cask to be opened and examined though.

I'm guessing there'd be a shit-load of bureaucratic hoops to jump through - hopefully not and the deceased's wishes can be seen through.

    Good luck anyway.

you could always bring home his ashes after cremation, and put them on his parents' grave -invite everyone along and have a wake, if money won't stretch to a full funeral here.

Condolences op. It cost me around 1800stg to fly my mum from Gatwick to Knock. This did include the casket and other associated fees. Pricey but at the time I didn't give it a second thought... Hope this helps.

1800stg wouldnt be to bad. Theres a wee rumour flying about that itll cost 7-9000stg. The body will be getting flown to the north and buried in belfast

He didnt want cremated though but its probably what will happen if the family cant come up with the money. The taking him home in the back of a van might sound a bit crazy but if it can be done, id do it just so he has his dying wishes.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Def shop around. Our first quote was double that. 7-9k seems ridiculous. We also had to pay for the Irish undertaker to do the rest on this side, so there is that cost too.

    Sorry for your loss.

If the idea of a van doesn't suit perhaps a rental of a hearse across to Holyhead might be an option, and ask the Irish undertaker to collect either at Holyhead or Dublin.

Here is a UK company that rents classic hearses with driver. Mostly as props and goth weddings but I see know reason why they wouldn't transport a coffin. Could be significantly cheaper than the crazy money the airlines want for this.

Repatriating a body can be expensive and bureaucratic from one country to another, however you say the body is in mainland UK and wishes to be buried in the north. My best guess at the easiest and cheapest would be for an undertaker to ferry the body to the north via belfast port, avoiding entering the republic at all.

    Sorry for the loss.

But seriously, respect his ****ing wishes and bury him where he wanted to be buried.

Ah here, theres no need for that. He clearly wants to meet his wish to be buried at home, but if its not affordable you have to take that into serious consideration too.

OP came here for advice about cost, not to get verbals from you...

CruelCoin there is absolutely no need to take such a tone with a person who has come to this site to get help with respecting someone's wishes. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Jimbo75, I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you got some good information in this thread but if you have any more questions, we have a bereavement forum which may be of benefit to you.

    Take care.

I did this for a family member. There are a number of ways and costs. PM me please for further info. I may be able to help if I'm familiar with city of origin.

If the death occurred in the UK and the burial is to be in Belfast, international repatriation rules should not apply. I'm not sure that it's even necessary to use a coffin to transport in the UK (although some sort of casket would be advisable). Use Scot-NI ferry and transport the corpse once it's been released.

There's a bereavement forum around here somewhere. They could probably help.

OK so, locking this up again.

OP - please ensure that you get proper legal advice before carrying out any of the suggestions given on this thread.
