Road Bike Advise

I'm looking to buy a road bike. I mainly want to use it to get fit as I find running boring and feel cycling would be a good substitute.

I'd like to spend approx 400 euro on an entry level bike (or even less if possible). As was looking at the Carerra TDF in Halfords last week but the compact frame was too small for me (I'm only 5'9 so couldn't believe that).

Anyway, I've seen some good value on these two websites:

http://www.decathlon.co.uk/# (do they deliver to ireland)

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en

Could someone recommend a good road bike from these websites or even an alternative one?

    THanks in advance!!

There are two frame sizes in the TDF. Did you try both?

Well I reserved the Medium and then Halfords rang me to say there is a mix up with the sizes of that bike. 54cm is from the saddle to the handle bars rather than the distance of the seat tube. They said the size of the seat tube was only 48cm. I went in to see it and they showed me what they said was a large and it was very small.

Get a second hand bike on adverts.ie or check the adverts section here- it'll be a huge improvement on anything you buy new. A new bike will lose 40 % of it's value once it walks out the door of the shop anyway(both bricks and mortar and online). Run any ones you like the look of on here. Most here will give you some expert advice (for free), maybe some will do some research for you. Regardless, if you get the right bike second hand- much better cycling experience than buying a cheap bike new.

^^^ This has been my experience pretty much, but I got my son a Triban 3 from Decathlon (you can't put a secondhand bike under the Christmas tree for a 14-year old) and it's really good. The wheels are about the worst bits on it, and the saddle is pretty gnarly, but they're both easily changed if necessary.

Yeah the 58cm one is pretty big, I'm 5'11 and I think it's even a tad too big for me.

6''2 90kg friend of mine who rides a 60cm orbea orca has no problems on my 58cm tdf, finds it very comfortable.

yep, ring up the belfast store (02 890 422 049), they'll tell you to order online and select "Reserve & Collect" and just ring them up with your address and they'll send it down, you've also gotta order a helmet for 14.99 which covers the delivery
