MY brother got medals ribboned and mounted by a guy in mckee . Some were ww1but but he managed to get ribbons for them. Did a great job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Derisol

Nice one. The lad in cork says he does all medals, old and new as well. I suppose it just comes down to how well they're done. There's nothing worse than crooked or sloppy medals.

I think I know of the guy you're talking about. I've heard nothing but good things about him.

Lad in the curragh is putting out some great work as well and Murty Quinn is still going in Mullingar of course. Fellas are spoiled for choice these days when it comes to quality work out there.

Have to say though, couple of mates got theirs done by a guy in Collins Cork and had to get them re-done again elsewhere. Don't know if it's the same guy Derisol mentioned though.

Ya, I think you're probably talking about the tailor up there. I saw his work. I went with lad out of the artillery unit. Have to say I'm very happy with his work. Couldn't fault it.

Was going to get mine done as they look smart on parades when done right, but decided not to as I like the idea of the original ribbon still being on them.

He mounted my original ribbons on the medals. Same as you, I wanted to keep them. Your dead right, that's important.

How do you keep your medals looking tidy on your tunic if they are not mounted? How many do you have?

I have three. They are neat kept as tidy as is possible. They don't look ironing board straight but as I said I decided to keep them original rather than what I think looks slightly false. Purely my own personal preference, each to their own.

Hey, it's your call bud, but have you never been pulled aside before a GOC's or some other parade and advised to get em sorted? Unmounted medals, even 2 or 3 look terribly untidy and stands out like a sore thumb even from a distance.

Edit: also, isn't it in the DFR's that, two or more medals are worn together, they should be mounted? As far as I know it says something like "from a single suspension bar". Or did I just imagine reading that somewhere? Lol.

Pardon my ignorance. What are court mounted medals?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Derisol

Court mounted medals are where the ribbon is brought down further, so that the medal sits in front of the ribbon. The Irish Army does not wear court-mounted medals.

I prefer court mounted then swing mounted, I think it looks sharper. Also stops clinking when marching.

And he'll do you a great deal price-wise if you go back to him for each new medal. Same for the guy in the DFTC.

Most of the others out there charge full whack for each new mounting from what I've heard.

Murty did a fantastic job on mine. The guy in McKee is great too. Had a botch job done once or twice from other guys but the two lads above would be a safe bet.

to be honest swing mounted medals clink when marching, look crap and you can get them 100 percent straight;.

hence why nearly every professional military court mounts medals.

I find I can get mine perfectly straight and rigid by piercing the tunic material in three places with the long pin as opposed to two, like most lads do. Don't know if that makes sense the way I've explained it.

The clinking sounds terrible I agree. All my medals have tiny little dents in the sides from banging off each other.

Are the court mounted medals fixed directly to the ribbon behind them or something? Is that how they don't move?

A backing material called buckram is used to keep them rigid.

How does that work? Are they fixed onto it somehow?

    Are you a serviceman yourself?

Heres a website that explains, the ribbon is fixed to it. Ex serviceman, Parachute Regiment junior leaders, II Squadron RAF Regiment then the Queen’s Colour Squadron (QCS).

Wow, you got about a bit. Never knew the Para's had a junior leaders program. How come you didn't follow it up and go into the Para's proper if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers for the link btw. Think I understand how they are fixed now.

Long story, II squadron RAF regiment have a more sophisticated Para role and I liked the look of them more, it was called junior parachute company, based in Farnborough and Aldershot, we did training in the morning, class room in the afternoon. Lots of training on Hankley common. QCS are part of the same regiment.

Old film, kids making it look easy.

Has anyone heard anything about the Defence Forces changing the precedence in which their medals are mounted? Seems like an awful lot of bother to go to to change the order in which your medals are mounted!!
