Surprised there's not a thread about this already.

    http://news.sky.com/story/1142428/washington-navy-yard-shooting-several-dead

Multiple gunmen involved so it's not your run-of-the-mill disgruntled nutjob
Two gunmen have shot 12 people, killing four, in an attack at the US Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters in Washington, according to police sources.

The men, one dressed in military fatigues and one carrying an AR-15 rifle, launched their attack on one of the biggest naval command buildings in the US in the early morning rush as people arrived for work.

Police sources told the Washington Post that they were dealing with two gunmen, who had shot dead four people and injured eight, sparking fears that it could be a terrorist attack.

A navy spokesman has told Sky News that two gunmen had been "taken down".

Six schools in Washington have been put on lockdown.

    Meh, 'Merika.

How do you even make that comment in this context?

    Really?

    Really?

How is attacking a naval base considered a "terrorist attack" now? A public place or civilians, yes, but this hardly fits that criteria.

    First thing that sprung to mind;

A bit of IRA style 'legitimate target' thinking, is that what you are arguing?

    Really.

Do continue. I'm all ears to hear how this incident is a result of 'Murica thinking. Do you even know what the meme means?

Freedom & constitutional rights have broken out across a naval yard in DC.

To say otherwise makes you a tree-hugging pinko commie?

The definition of terrorism is hotly contested.

Initial reports said he had a doubled barrelled shotgun..how that can be confused with an AR15 I have no idea:pac:

It's just being reported as a potential terrorist attack. Nothing confirmed or denied officially yet.

Anyway, attacks aren't judged to be terrorism related based solely on the target!

Because every active shooter has an AR-15, even when they don't.

Hopefully these two men do not have any links to the USA or they will have to possibly bomb themselves to get rid of all terrorists that could be harbored in that country.

I heard Sky News correspondents trying to grapple with the terminology earlier, they said an AR15 was an 'assault rifle', an 'assault style rifle' and 'similar to an AK47'.

Careful now! It just annoys me to see the term bandied about meaninglessly, either through lazy reporting or scaremongering.

It may shock you, but a lot of people, myself included, don't care what happens in America, land of freedom. It's not the center of the world. I'm still musing on the miracle that was the 4200 odd people being saved from the Costa Concordia without any evacuation plan back in 2012 and the raising of it today.

So there were more murders in America today then on an average day, Why should that bother me? Seriously?

Some dead & injured people are a small price to pay for the freedom to bear arms & uphold good constitutionalism.

Fewer lives would have been lost had everyone in DC been armed to the teeth.

ehh.. I know it's asking a lot, but can we try to avoid the whole gun-debate in this thread?

There's literally dozens of those threads already.. and the same people arguing in almost all of them.

Well aren't we the coolest kids in town, people shot dead and all we have to offer is a demonstration of our own prejudice.

Wondering how the hell these guys got into the Navy Yar, security would be pretty damn tight and you'd have needed a security pass to get in at the very least...

That's pretty much impossible given the nature of the incident. You'll have people coming in to play with the new terms they picked up on Sky News like 'assault style rifles'.

Someone has to tell us that you don't care about people getting shot in the US? I can't speak for everyone but I could have made it through the day without reading that you don't care.

Anyway, feel free to continue not caring and posting more about how you don't care. It's riveting.

Our children will never be safe until all teachers have guns in the classroom.

    More guns save lives!

As has been pointed out to me in the past; people care because of our special relationship with the US. We have family/friends there. We rely on American tourism and investment. We consumer their culture (am not just talking about fast food, btw).

Is it a good thing that we care so much? Can't say. Personally, I wish the care was equally distributed around the world. But it isn't.

Someone had to say 'merika' and when they were called on it basically say 'well...well...I don't want to talk about it anyway' making it seem like someone forced them to comment:pac: It's like a child having a tantrum:pac:

If it is a terrorist attack, then it will have a global impact.

I don't agree with US foreign policy nor would I be happy to subject myself to aggressive TSA policing, but you would be naive to think that if this is a terrorist attack it won't increase pressure from the hawks in terms of foreign policy, it comes at a very sensitive time in global diplomatic regions regarding the middle east and could have a significant impact on US patience in the region, whether rightly or wrongly.

Like it or not, it's relevant to all of us if it's a terrorist attack. If it's another gun + mental illness homocide then yes, it isn't as relevant.

Terrorism is the deployment of violence against civilians to further a political agenda.
Ambushing an American convoy in Afghanistan is a legitimate tactic of resistance to military occupation.

Ah but sure everything in America is terrorism now and you can be banged up without trial if the prez says so. The definition is so damn vague and all encompassing that you can be sent to Guantanamo for dancing with a chick in a Turkish nightclub. You're a domestic terrorist if you go on any demonstration that might embarrass the govt or highlight something that they'd prefer to remain under wraps.

I reckon (although it's really too early) it's a disgruntled ex employee gone postal. If it is terrorism, it's a rather cynical attack during some very testing times.

Mr Benevolent if you don't care whats going on then you don't need to post in this thread.

Press Conference says there are 2 potential shooters that aren't located.

Both in military gear but not confirmed if they are military personal.

If the reports of assault rifles (rumored AR-15s) are true its likely that they are military issued as civilian ARs are single shot.

The cops radio are encrypted so can't listen to it but there is Washington DC Fire and EMS stream here http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/2455

You can just see the flunkies in Washington falling over themselves asking if these two can be linked in some way to Syria even if the two are a pair of flabby gingers from the arse-end of West Virginia.

Can we just have a news thread for things like this? No discussion, nothing. Just the news. It's the same thread that has happened so many times before.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,652 ✭✭✭I am pie

Wasn't there some recent warning about an escalation of terror in the US from the usual suspects, it seems fairly plausible to try and force their hand to get involved in Syria or in the middle east in general? They want to drag the US military into another conflict without exit, even better if it worsens diplomatic relations with the Chinese and Russians.
