313 million Americans are ignorant says shining light of non ignorance on a message board more at 11

There's ignorant people in every lane, townland, village, town, county, state and province in the world. Always was, always will be. It's a pity that they have enough intelligence to utilise social media, but in a way it's good as it shows them up for what they are.

I don't know what they're all complaining about, it's about time a native American won.

You fail to see the distinction between Americans and 'Muricans - this thread is concerned with the latter, some of whom have been making a holy show of themselves on social media over this

Reminds me of the Diwali party my niece's school had. The kids were told to wear traditional Indian dress.

My sister had a call from a panicking mother, she could only find a Pocahontas costume, did she think that would be OK?

You need no intelligence whatsoever to use social media, they are catered and crafted to be as accessible as they get. Put a 6 years old, barely able to read/write, in front of Facebook or Twitter and see how long it takes for them to figure things out.

The big problem with social media is exactly that: they provide the perfect vehicle for ignorant and stupid keyboard warriors to spread their venom, with no fear of any backlash or consequences. 99 out of 100 of the lowlifes posting these comments would never have such discussion face to face with other people, or in a public place.

On the other side, I agree that in a way this also provides a very good picture of what many people think for real, without the facade they need in day-to-day interaction. Mankind is screwed, bit time.

The american school system is pretty crap and there are vested interests in keeping people thinking that the majority of Americans are white and speak english and those are the people who should represent America.

I wouldn't call it venom, that gives too much weight to their ramblings. It's more like walking into a room that you know has a big annoying blue bottle fly in it.

    Moral of this story.

Funny and tragic in equal measure. Does make me wonder how actual Arab-Americans get by with the amount of ignorance thrown their way over there...

....tbh, if we treated posts on social media along the lines of 'some gobshite in the pub said....' we'd be better off.

I'm getting so much second-hand embarrassment from reading those tweets. My favorite was "Egypt dancing? This is America" in response to the Bollywood routine she danced. Those tweets are awful, but also hilarious because how fcuking stupid do you have to be? But then they make me sad because people the world over will read them and it will just reinforce negative stereotypes of Americans. It's funny how some of the most self-proclaimed patriotic people do the most damage to the US reputation worldwide.

There is of course a strain of thick, ignorant racism of this variety that runs through American society but are we any different in Ireland? Lee Chin, an Irishman and dual GAA star of Chinese heritage has come in for buckets of abuse while playing the national games; is that any different than the abuse being thrown at your one? There are stupid bigots in every country in the world, it's not limited to the USA.

Sort of an irony spiral going on there.
I mean theres a lot of Americans, to tar them all as ignorant would be ignorant.

That said their redneck community provide disproportionate lulz, I love them for it.

    Their Obama-phone section too.

This is a country that distrusts atheists more than rapists.

Can somebody please tell Bobby Jindal (R-LA) that all white americans now hate him and wish he would go back to Egypt, or do we treat it as some dopes mouthing off?

NDTV carried an absurd 'debate' on this story to-day. The charge layed was that America was racist, based on comments on social networks. Well Done India, Well Done. And next in this magical thinking strategy will be the alleviation of 400,000,000 from subsistence-level poverty.

The school system (district) that we are in is outstanding. It far exceeds anything our children received when we were in Ireland. I wouldn't put my kids back in school in Ireland if I had a gun to my head.

    Not really funny.
Whatever mistakes she made in life, the girls life was cut very short with cancer.

On topic, Miss America is a fine looking lady.

I don't mean to make light of anyone's death (and I didn't). Although, I will say I thought that she was a 'pig' in life. Perhaps she might have grown wiser and changed with age. None of us really know. I am only dealing with the sample size provided.

I would be willing to be that 99% of the people posting didn't watch the competition. They wouldn't even have a clue what she looked like.

Unfortunately it's worse than that. I don't even buy into the "it's a vocal minority" thing; Wherever fyou go on the Internet where unmoderated discussion is allowed, there is an over-abundance of stupid, ignorant and racist comments - to the point that they completely drown any possible conversation. More worrisome still, many times you can clearly see many comments come from very young people - those who should have an open mind, being born in a multicultural reality.

Classic example are Youtube comments; Many times, they descend into insults and/or racist slur with no reason whatsoever. I'm not sure it's still around, but some time ago there was a "sneezing panda" video where, somehow, posters managed to engage into a discussion the KKK would be proud of.

Disregrading what's already been said numerous times of the hateful nature of people, know what's funny ? Supporters of her calling her a 'native American' Indian, that it's about time a 'real' Indian won - She's an Asian Indian!!

The idiocy of the US has no bounds...

As a noted philosopher once put it, "civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.". This basic principle works fairly well in Peaceable Journey/Castle Doctrine jurisdictions such as Texas. All y'all have a nice day now, y'hear??
