Can Jones get his first Standing KO?

This is a real tester for when he moves up to HW where he'll need pure striking power in his arsenal if he wants to challenge the big boys. He'll also need to prove he can take decent shots, this fight should show us some of that. Can't wait

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,424 ✭✭✭garhjw

Yes, I agree about jones' knockout power. I think it is there but he does use some unorthodox angles and strikes so perhaps that affects the power delivery.

He doesn't commit his weight fully to most of his strikes and yet still hurts guys with them.. such is his skill and pure technique. There's been a clear movement away from leaning fully into strikes in some camps... firing out well timed snappy strikes as opposed to swinging through the target. like the difference between Wandy punching and Bisping punching... totally opposite mechanics and technique. One if safer but you rarely see KO's. Bisping is an extreme example.

Bones controls distance using his kicks and mesmerizing jazz hands to confuse, bully and disrupt opponents flow, picking his shots one at a time constantly forcing his opponent to the cage wall giving him options but he virtually never leans in for a finishing strike the way so many other fighters do... and it has worked for him at LHW. But it won't at HW. They will absorb his single strikes easier because they're so much bigger with more muscle and his length advantage will be massively reduced. He may have that KO power in his hands - I've just never seen it yet because his Jackson influenced game plan is so set in stone.

No way GJ would ever allow Jones to swing a flurry of punches with bad intentions under any circumstances... Jackson would quit straight away run away and cry. He might have to in this fight though IF, and that's a BIG IF, Gusto turns up to war!

Just looking over fighters records for this card and it really is the night of win streaks.

    Dustin Kimura - 10
    Myles Jury - 12
Pat Healy - 7 (weed doesn't count imo)
    Khabib Nurmagomedov - 20
    Francis Carmont - 10
    Barão - 30
    Gustafsson - 6
Jones - 9 LHW records, and realistically its 19 as nobody counts Matt Hamill

jaysus yeah it's a good card ! Healy is such a beast

What Matt Mitrione has ever done to warrant such high places on fight cards I'll never know. I don't even dislike the guy, he seems dead on. He's just not anywhere near good enough.

    A combination of factors really.
He's an ex NFL player (which probably attracted some fans to him), his whole pro mma career has been within the UFC (which is a bit of a novelty), and he's an all round likeable character which makes him fairly popular among the fans.
I think the main reason though is that the heavyweight division is pretty thin on huge talent. If it was a stacked division then he wouldn't be so high up the card.

healy khabib the one im most looking forward to
khabib is in my opinion a fighter going places and I honestly
wouldnt be surprised if he got a title fight within two years
I rate him that highly and think he will outclass healy
without finishing given how tough healy is

Can't wait for Barao v Wineland.

Eddie Wineland seems like a real genuine guy and I hope he gets the win. He's a real hard worker and kind of goes unnoticed. Really hope he wins this. He deserves it imo.

1-1 in my books, though that round was very close, bones with 6 take down attempts and 0 take downs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,158 ✭✭✭Arawn

    2-1 gust!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,158 ✭✭✭Arawn

...hard round to call, jones was losing till last 30 seconds and a big spinning elbow causes serious damage for him, from then on survival mode

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,901 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

2-2 into the 5th and final

This is the best LHW title fight since Jones became champ. Very quiet here tonight/today

Gustafson'sstock has risen a ridic amount inmy eyes, regardless of result.
I feel Jones is taking the fifth. These two will fight again.

Gotta give so much respect to both guys. I can't believe how competitive that fight was, it could go either way.

how did a judge score that 4-1 to jones :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭empacher

    49-46 Gus got robbed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,901 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

    49-46 was a bit harsh

    I had Jones rounds 1, 4 and 5. Alexander 2 and 3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,369 ✭✭✭the incredible pudding

Can't understand the 49-46; judges be crazy!

Jones' elbows are more dangerous than his hands imo, his aggression in the 4th won it for him though, maybe gus should have went for a take down then. Hopefully we'll have a rematch soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,868 ✭✭✭Andersonisgod

Robbed of his huge physical advantage I thought Jones looked like a different fighter, a more vulnerable fighter. No doubt he did well to win it, though I thought round 4 was debatable. If this move to heavyweight were to ever happen I really think he'd struggle against Cain and JDS.

Ah come on now, it wasn't anything near a sustained beating. It was a very very even fight. You could argue that Gustafsson did more damage in the first three rounds, but on points the 2nd was most likely jones' and the third was pretty debatable.
