07 VW Passat B6 1.6 Petrol Query HELP

    Hi Guys

Just a quick one, I've had the passat over 2 years now and its been really reliable.

I got a full service from a local indy mechanic and it flew through the NCT a few days later as I expected.

However since then I've had to top up the oil twice following a amber warning light, which is suprising since I have never had to top it up in the two previous years.

I dont know much about cars but the car sounds fine, no strange noises, no loss of power, no signs of a leak under the bonnet or on the ground under the car so i'm assuming its burning it?

My question is, is it possible the local indy threw in the wrong grade oil which is burning up quick or is this sounding a bit more serious?

Anything I can do to confirm what the problem is before paying for a diagnostic?

    Cheers
    Anthony

Have you checked the oil filter or sump bung - either might be leaking after the service?
The oil could be gathering on the engine cover under the car.

To be honest I've just been looking at the ground after pulling out from my drive, haven't seen any oil patches so i just assumed they weren't leaking.

Its just crazy, I know cars as they get older may burn a bit of oil but this just seems to be a bit too sudden, and a bit coincidentally close to the service.

Am i right in rulling out head gasket issue, in that i have no smoke from the exhaust, and the oil cap isnt full of muck? and I've experienced no loss of power?

How much did you top it up by and what oil did you put in?

I've had to put in maybe half a litre.

And I've gone with the grade that the charts in Halfords recommends for model.

I've only driven maybe once or twice a week since the service.

I know it was already said but are you sure the bottom plastic engine cover/sump guard isnt just trapping/holding the leaking oil and hence stopping it drip on the ground. Get a decent flashlight and look over the engine and under it to see and leaks.

Go back to the mechanic, and ask them?

Cheers guys, I'll have a good scout and see if there is oil trapped in the plastic cover.

Will get back to the mechanic if nothing shows.

Pain the arse trying to get to the mechanics working in the city centre.

Is my own stupid theory of the mechanic having put crap oil a non runner? I know the car was always previously serviced at a main dealer, maybe they used a better quality of oil?

Right I've had a good look, its not gathering oil on the underneath engine cover. I've inspected the engine and no sign of a leak anywhere. I've had a mate drive behind on the motorway and its not puffing smoke.

I'm proper lost on whats happening.

What oil are you using and is it the same as what was in it previously? How many miles are on the car now?

Your best bet if it's still burning is perhaps to get another oil change to a different grade - I'm sure someone can recommend a grade for your car.

By any chance do you have any receipts from previous services that show what oil was used in it?
