Mixing Shimano Components

Want to upgrade some of the parts on my bike (after breaking my chain and destroying the derailleur!).

I currently have Shimano Dura Ace 9 speed group but after a previous mishap was using a Tiagra rear derailleur.

On the webstores most of the derailleurs are listing as 10 speed, would they still work ok on a nine speed?

Also, at this point I want to change the front crankset (will be getting new chain and cassette so going to do the whole thing). Don't want to change the levers (which are nine speed DA) but again most of the cranksets listed are either 10 speed or 11 (I,m guessing 11 is much thinner chain so not a runner & they are more expensive).

Since this isn't a planned spend I was thinking of using no more than 105 parts to save the cash a bit.

Can I use 10 speed derailleurs on a nine speed levers?

Regardless of compatibility there should be a Law against using Tiagra and Dura Ace!!!

Seriously though most non 10/11 speed items have good compatibility so the 10 speed rear derailleur should be no problem as with the 10 speed chainset.

There is a Shimano website with the compatibility listings, have a google and you should find it. Check there to be sure if your going to buy high end items.

You can use any speed chainsets & derailleurs (front or back). When it comes to levers you need to match the rear cassette and the chain. The chain gets narrower as you increase the number of gears. Derailleurs and front chainrings don't care how narrow the chain is.

You can even mix and match mtb and road shimano parts (apart from 10speed mtb, they changed the cable pull ratio on the derailleurs).
