I have an ulster bank student account with no problems. (main thing is there's no bank charges, don't know if other banks do this.) There's a branch on the main street.

I think all banks have that with student a/cs.

I have an AIB a/c and have had no problems with them in the seven or so years that I've had it. There's an AIB on campus (although they don't deal with cash at all) and on main street too which is handy.

Cashless banks are common in other countries, they can help you with anything that doesn't involve cash. (setting up direct debts, transfer funds, opening accounts)
The reason for this is the cost to insure a branch that handles cash.

Dead handy though for sorting out society banking stuff.

You can do most of that on the internet (with the exception of opening an account )

Never thought of the society stuff though

Could they not even just put one of those machines in like an ATM that you can deposit cash and cheques into ?

I think the whole idea is that they don't have cash at all. It's a safety and insurance thing.

But they have an atm which is essentially the same thing , just the money goes in reverse....

ATM isn't actually in the bank and doesn't take in cash and, based on the way the on-campus branch is, is a lot harder to steal from. Taking in cash also holds the risk of taking in a lot more cash than an ATM can give out.

It's only meant to be an administrative branch. Sure there's a cash branch only down the road anyway.

I think you tow have your wires crossed,
the branch on main street has a lodgement machine inside it.

But since it would take in cash, you'd have to pay insurance, even if it does go in a locked box.

as the old saying goes, locks only keep out honest people.

I presumed that we were talking about the ATM on campus?

I think Ulster Bank were the first to have Visa Debit cards... now AIB do, I think BOI have them too.

They sure do. BOI have had them a while, before AIB did them.

So I know which bank your with :P

AIB rolled them out a few months after BOI (BOI was in May, AIB in October).
Halifax had them first before the rest, but don't exist.

Laser will cease to exist after February next year.

    AIB :-P

I just had to watch my brother flaunt his BOI Visa Debit for months before my AIB one arrived.

I have had a credit card for years now, so it never really bothered me.
I still use the credit card more the visa debit tbh.

I'd advise most students against credit cards, I haven't run myself into any serious debt, but I have seen others do it. And credit cards are a very expensive form of debt. (Not as bad as those loan shark companies, but still a bit steep)

They were very accommodating with me when I had to pay outstanding campus rent after I left first year (not many would be with a grand in rent) :P
