I was disappointed the WW2 bomber didn't blow up the North Strand for old times sake.

I crawled back under the covers as a bomber went over......quivering and mumbling "Vietnam"

No. I can see plenty of planes in the sky every day if I was bothered.

Say there was a few blimps down by the quays alright. And by blimps I mean fat birds, land blimps if you will

The most dissapointing part was when the A380 didn't fly into our non existant skyscrapers causing a 911 x 1,000 type event.

I've been on a plane once... I got really high!!!

Did they fly low over the City ? I still remember when Aerlingus got its first 747 .They flew the plane very low over the City ,and from my garden in Phibsborough ,i felt that i could almost touch it .It was really spectacular .

800ft from sea level and at 180 knots.

Some aircraft like the F-86 Sabre and the Hawker Hunter went over 300knots and below 700ft.

I was down at the dockland for the first couple of hours really disappointed with the line up and time gaps between planes ( although I understood the reason for this) some of it was cool but in general no atmosphere way too much standing around. I missed the A380 which is what I was really interested in because I had theatre tickets.

It was more like ****efest. Feck all atmosphere, unlike the tall ships event held in the same area.

The bouncing bomb on the Liffey was the highlight for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,750 ✭✭✭iDave

I thought it was better than tall ships. The planes actually moved unlike a bunch of old ships sitting there manned by very bored looking sailors

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,740 ✭✭✭chughes

I was there and thought it was good. Really enjoyed the old stuff like the B17, Catalina, and the Sabre and Hunter display.

It will probably be a once in a lifetime event to see passenger airplanes such as A380, A340 etc. fly so close to central Dublin unless Air Al Qaeda decide to revive its short lived service it ran temporarily back in 2001.

When you plan a day like that with a 2 yrs old baby, you stop planning it seeing the weather as it was until 1pm. I was hoping to see something from my balcony and in the end it was more fun than it would in the docks, in this wind, with a kid and a pushchair :) I couldn't have a better view on this to be honest with all the planes banking left and directly in front of our windows. Also, the notion of you sitting at home (as opposed to standing in the crowd of people, in the middle of the even) and seeing those machines flying over the city - quite nice experience.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 32,865 ✭✭✭✭MagicMarker

I watched some of it from my balcony. I would have been really pissed off though had I have had to travel far to get into town, it was all just a bit shít.

Definitely, going to the docks would end up with a huge disappointment. Seeing it from home tho, can't complain

Also, thought that the low pass would be... lower

I was going to go, but then just didn't bother.
Plus I would have had to spend a few hours in the city and seeing the rambling junkie zombies and other such knackers roaming the streets and annoying people would have just p1ssed me off too much.

To be honest, I wasn't that impressed, it was mostly commercial aircraft, seeing a Ryan Air plane fly up the Liffy was novel for many tourists, as it's the closest you'll get seeing one within an asses roar of any city destination you'll be flying to.
This event was last held in the 30's an I can see why, then a commercial plane was a novelty, today it's a necessary evil.
The A380 was cool enough as were the Sabre and the B17. But only because these were planes you wouldn't normally see on your way through Dublin airport.
For the most part 800ft was too high to see anything in any great detail and the gap between flyovers left a lot of parents straining to keep restless kids from boredom.

Also, the perfect opportunity to level Liberty Hall was missed.

    911,000?

    That would be catastrophic

i didnt see one junkie or knacker in the city yesterday, not one. these people tend to get diluted and become irrelevant when theres something on.

    :pac::pac::pac:

I was tempted to go when the Vulcan bomber was due to make an appearance, but when they pulled out TBH I thought Meh(leaky fuel tanks I gather. Fair enough. The B17 and the Sabre would have been the only other draw for me, but not enough of a draw. I never got the deal with airliner appreciation TBH. I know they're so much more but for me they're more like buses in the sky. Plus given they were flying over a city I figured it would have been pretty tame for good safety reasons. If anything had gone pear shaped with the vintage stuff it would have been a real disaster/youtube moment.

I was also disappointed with the lineup TBH. The UK have got all sorts of cool kit in public and private hands yet the sabre and hawker hunter was it(and the no show Vulcan). Never mind what the US has on bases all over Europe. Where they invited, or did they decline? Who knows.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

after the budget row last year all funding for US Mil taking part in airshows has basically been pulled .

You would also attract a load of tree hugging crusty types shouting about war etc ( think Salthill a few years ago )

    I enjoyed the show !

Wouldn't it have been great to have the flight fest at the same time as the tall ships? Throw in sausageOktoberfest and we'd be jammin.

Watched it from a room in Blackrock Clinic yesterday, so had a great view of aircraft on approach and had a fair few go directly overhead as the looped for second passes or as they came out from Casement to take part, so we got very close views of the Catalina, Hercules, Etihad A340 and the A380, without having to put up with crowds or the cold.

Of course, not having to spend the afternoon in Blackrock Clinic at all would have been better!

I think people should look for refunds if they thought it was that bad..

the B17-G made it worthwhile on its own. Had a great view of it.. awe inspiring.

Gutted the vulcan and the hercules did'nt make it. Hopefully next year they get some russian nuclear bombers over, a black jack and a bear would be nice

Given the litigious nature of rayanair these days, I'd like to clarify that this remark is not factual but rather a humorous aside. Also Ryanairs' safety record is beyond reproach

I went with my family to Newbridge House,as I felt there was more to do there, and also my daughter didnt want to stand around in the pi55ing rain and strong winds for 2 hours to see some planes fly over.
I was of the same frame of mind too,so off to Newbridge House instead.

I let you enjoy your flight fest thread in peace and quiet now.

I thought it was fecking brilliant. The pace was almost perfect, very little wait between fly-bys. While the grownups may have found the commercial planes boring my daughter (nearly 3yo) loved how massive they were and these were deffo preferred to the fast moving smaller planes!!

I was on the quays near Jurys and there was a great atmosphere.

Great event, brilliantly organsised (except for the lack of toilets). Shame I missed the end as my girl got tired after the long day, hope they do it again!

    Jesus Paddy relax the kax!

I went to the last post in the thread and it happened to be yours. You said FF was sh1t, so I looked at your pics and to me it looked sh1t...big deal, no need to cry about it.

Maybe you shouldn't post in a flight fest thread to tell people it was sh1t and then smiley face the fcuk out of your post by saying you went somewhere else.

Will I post flight fest pics in the thread you have about the thing you went to? Nah.

Anyway back on topic. Flight fest was ok but not great. Pity the wasn't more military stuff but what can ya do, weather picked up a bit which was great.

Read a thread from the plane-spotting anoraks on the Aviation forum and they loved it but for a normal Joe Soap it was nothing.
Was in a group of about 10 people, kids as well, and we were just standing by a windy river with a plane going by every 15 minutes.

No aerobatics because of city restrictions, so there wasn't a lot to see.

We left for food after 2 hours (thousands of others were streaming away too) but got back to see the A380 which was impressive.

Also, I believe the Ryanair pilots were very excited to actually fly to a real city!

We gave up and left early, due to cold tired kids.

Luckily though, as we walked out of Sandycove dart station the A380 flew over pretty low.

Turns out Dun Laoghaire was also a good place to watch from.

Earlier in the day there was a big gap between fly bys. It improved as the day went on though.

Why would I lie about being there? FFS

There was a definite long delay between fly pasts.
