Peugeot Ecomatique - yay or nay?

The old man currently has a 3008 which in fairness is a fine car. However he has the poverty spec one with steel wheels and a manual box. He is considering a 2012 model to replace his own which has a good few miles at this stage.

Now he is jealous of me and the fact that I have an auto and is looking seriously at the 3008 Ecomatique. It seems to be well enough priced for an auto and crucially for him at least the tax remains low and it appears to offer better mpg.

Any experiences good or bad of this transmission? Pretty mixed reviews online but it would be nice to hear boardsies experiences.

I thought that was a good thing? Thought the DSG by VW, the Powershift by Ford or the PDK by Porsche were all good automated manual boxes? Just wondering if the French offering in the same league?

    Those are dual clutch transmissions.

Is the ecomatique not just a normal gearbox with servo motors pulling and pushing the gear linkages and letting the clutch up and down?

See toyota multimode, citroen sensodrive, ford durashift est

Isn't that the same as Citroen's EGS box which is muck?

I've driven a few cars Citroen / Peugeot cars with that gearbox, and I find it horrific.

Tried easing off to get it to change, didn't work.

Tried keeping the pedal to the metal, didn't work.

Tried changing via the paddles or stick, marginally better, but still nowhere near as good as a manual or an auto.

Worth test driving to see if he thinks it's as appalling as I do. Made someone test drive one before he ordered it, and he still ordered it after an overnight test drive.

Yeah, an experience I'd rather not repeat. It was a right heap of crap with that gearbox.

Had a mind of its own most of the time which isn't what you want coming up/onto a round about. I found it often shifted to second, then as you went to go it would go to third. It made for a few hairy moments when it was changing gear three times for one manoeuvre. Changes aren't smooth either.

That's true of any of those type gearboxes I've driven. Worst was a Citroen C2 1.4 VTR sensodrive(L)
