Rules when pirating

I am the only one who has rules for pirating? For instance I do not pirate from indie/unknown artists/devs/directors. If I pirate something and I like it I will either buy it or something else from the developer/artist etc. For every album that I buy from an artist I am allowed to pirate another but only if I am poor when the album comes out. Also I pay my €7 to Netflix every month so if its not on there then it's fair game.

I have to say I don't pirate nearly as much as I used to but when I do the above rules apply.

I used to figure TV shows fair game, but no music or films.

I don't pirate at all now being a good boy to get a passport with an eagle on it.

I tend to pirate only British galleons. Anything that doesnt fly a flag is fair game too. Yarrrr. A fair booty goes to the man that brings me the captains hat matey.

You reckon they monitor that? Surely not?

Or just don't want to take the chance?

I don't pirate games ever. Or films that are currently in the cinema. I do pirate music but mostly chart music. I will download other stuff but often it will be a year or two after it has been released so in my view they have their money made and its not different to taking a loan of it from a friend. I pirate tv shows wholesale though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,460 ✭✭✭Ishmael

Meh, no real need for pirating anymore really.

Plenty of cheap streaming options available for Music, Movies and Games. Downloading stuff is too much hassle to manage after a while.

Pirate Pirates of the Caribbean, from The Pirate Bay, dressed as a pirate, drinking a bottle of rum and singing yo ho, it's the pirates life for me... other than that, no.

Why would I even take the chance? Oh look, I saved $4.99 not paying for "Now You See Me" - but I picked a felony and now cannot apply.

    Always reseed.

Do you get a criminal record if you pay the fine? Is it not just like a penalty point?

what are these fines ye speak of? and who issues them? and how are ye caught?

not being a troll - genuinely interested - are ye talking about actual court proceedings?

I won't pirate anything if I can get it easily at a reasonable price. If it's a pain in the ass to get or it's insanely overpriced then I pirate. The only thing's I've pirated in the last few months are the latest episodes of tv shows. Even the latest Breaking Bad is on Netflix so it's looking like I won't need to keep pirating shows for much longer too.

I used to pirate a lot of music but I haven't pirated any since I signed up for Spotify when it became available over here. I refused to pay €20 a pop for an album, especially when the artist barely sees a fraction of it.

I don't pirate games anymore. I usually only get a small number of games a year on release, everything else I get in the steam sales for next to nothing. I used to pirate lots of games and then I would pay for the ones I enjoyed but steam makes games so convenient I'm just not bothered anymore. In the olden days I'd need to root around the net for a no-cd crack anyway so it was no real extra effort to just torrent the whole package. Just so handy and reasonably priced now days to get it on steam.

I would worry about what you were downloading if it could get you a felony conviction!
Downloading movies and music is not a felony!

Always leave a comment or rating on the quality of a download. There is nothing more annoying than downloading something to discover there is Russian subtitles you can't get rid of. Or the quality is ****.

I totally understand pirating the newest tv shows that you have no alternative avenue to watch them by. I understand downloading music that you will listen to many times but downloading loads of tv shows and movies makes no sense to me, total waste of effort and time.

Video piracy is a crime. Do Not accept it. Demand a GENUINE cassette from your video store.

Poor quality illegal video cassettes reduce your viewing pleasure and jeprodise future film production. If in doubt, telephone the federation against copyright theft (FACT) on 020 8568 6646.

I pay for spotify and Netflix, so like OP, if an artist isn't on Spotify or a film not on Netflix then it's fair game. I know that s not right but...

TV shows are fair game imo. I'm on UPC so can't get Sky Atlantic, therefore no access to any HBO shows. And they can feck off if they expect me to pay 50 quid for DVD box set of a season 6 months after it airs on TV.

Before spotify, I would generally pirate an album to sample. if I liked it enough for multiple listens then I'd buy my own copy of it. would probably do the same if a new band weren't on spotify.

Yes I would and so would any person in their right mind.

That you wouldn't steal a car, you wouldn't steal a CD ad was stupid and pointless, you are comparing something that can be infinitely copied to something that can't.

Exactly the reason I do pirate, I have bought DVDs and have the pleasure of looking at this for maybe half an hour before I can see my movie, pirate just plays

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,797 ✭✭✭✭hatrickpatrick

Most of the stuff I pirate is stuff I either already have but my copy is damaged / lost, or else it's a DVD / blu ray I rented which had a scratch on it. the latter is particularly ridiculous, I've almost given up on renting anything anymore because of the number of such incidents. I've paid to watch the movie and I'm going to delete it after watching anyway to save hard disk space, so is it really wrong?

Never pirate games, well I have tons of roms from old, old consoles like the NES but not newer stuff. Cams are a no no, dunno why anyone bothers, have downloaded HD versions of stuff I already own on dvd alright, or if something is stupidly expensive to buy or not available anymore and not on netflix or whatever.
