Peugeot 407 Gearbox Problem

Hi All, I have a Peugeot 407 '05 petrol. I have noticed over the past day or two that there is a noise and rattle when I take my foot off the accelerator. It's not present when I am accelerating particularly in high gear.

Brought it to my mechanic and he reckons the noise is coming from the gearbox. He didn't go into much detail but said I might need to think about replacing the gearbox. He is going to call someone on Monday but I am starting to panic that it might be very expensive. Anybody have any idea of a ballpark figure for how much it might cost if a new gearbox is needed?

    Thanks in advance!

    Ryan

It may well just be the Right hand drive shaft carrier bearing. That shaft leaves the box straight, then through a bearing bolted to the back of the engine block after which it goes into a joint, then to the cv joint. Quite often, and on quite a lot of cars, its just that but its extremely easy to miss. Id ask him about it, just for peace of mind that it was checked.
