Ive recently walked away from the Sport I love hurling which I feel it is for the best as I am no longer the player I once was and I was treated like **** by the manager for an important championship game which proved to be the final nail in the coffin and made my decision all the more easier.

What I dont want now is to become lazy and fat and Ive always been an active, sporty person with an interest in most sports. I used to play a bit of soccer and Im currently clueless at what to do now as I need something new to replace the large gap left behind by hurling.

**** doesn't even trigger the swear filter.

OP, I would say you're no more a hurler than I am & you are talking shite. Maybe try coffin-nailing?

Competitive **** isn't the sport it used to be tbh.

Weightlifting? Thats what I do and I love it, well weightlifting for size and squash and soccer for cardio. Find the right squash partner and you'll never look back trust me.

Become a pro wrestler on the Irish wrestling scene.
It's great! You get to fake beat up guys and not get paid. Told that in order to get paid you got to "pay your dues" - But there are no dues! it's great! But wait, there's MORE!

Enter a world where you get used by the by the mysterious 'booker' - all too often it's the guy running the promotion :pac: Making money off you risking your body and health. Still not sold? ... well if you don't train and pay at least €10 per session contributing to the 'pro wrestling school' you wont get booked on any shows!

Added bonuses are that the people you interact with are generally pricks out for themselves. Why delay, call 1550 be-a-fool today! :pac:

(while the above was put in a joke-ish manner, sadly everything I said above is true)

It depends what you are after. If you enjoy the rules of sport where you play alone or with a team to acheive some goal.... then you clearly need to find a new sport.

If you are into just keeping your body alive then you have a whole different set of options. And from ongoing personal experience I can recommend Capoeira to you as one system that has no real goal in mind.... but it will allow you to push the boundries of what your body can and can not do in ways you did not even think were pushable.

Like Rugby capoeira has a place for most builds and abilities and goals. But it will push those boundries for you. So take into it what you think you can do and learn from it, and learn that the best philosophy you can take into sport is that the whole point of sport is not winning, but learning how to push your own personal boundries that little bit further every day than they were the day before.

Dont let some manager let you walk away from a sport you love. Just do what all the other hurling lovers do. Drop down from team to team until you hit Junior B and play that until your knees give way.

    Triathlon / Duathlon.

Im still crap at tri's but its great craic. A pain to get all the gear originally (bike, wetsuits etc) so sign up to do a duathlon first (run - cycle - run) and see if you catch the bug. All you need is a half decent bike, runners, shorts, and a helmet. I started a few years ago and im still hooked. With your hurling background you should be pretty fast with all that fartlek training.

If you near Leinster, Tri Athy is a good easy flat tri course for beginners. For the duathlons, id aim for the Belpark tri club duathlons in the Phoenix park during the summer months (just missed the boat I know) on Wednesday eves. 2.5km run, 13km cycle, 2.5km run. Runireland.com has more but things will be winding down for the winter.

Ive more info if you want.

I'm still mad at myself that I didn't take up Fencing at College as it was a sport that was totally new (to myself). The Modern pentathlon seems to be really well organised in Ireland and they supply all the equipment and training for those looking to get into the sport. I remember at the last Olympic games we nearly won medals at it. They are always looking for people and I think they supply the horses and you could train yourself up in shooting and take horseriding lessons. TBH the standard at the Oympics didnt look great. I bet anyone putting a bit of effort into it could get to "world class" standard which is not something you could say about other sports.

Karting is a great fun introduction to motor sports.

No I feel my time is up in terms of playing the game, Ive had a very poor season and was already considering it anyway and Im not the player I once was but getting dropped for an important championship game when Ive been playing all year has made the decision easier. I was once young hurler of the year in our club and its a terrible fall from grace and the championship game was a humiliation for me so no, going back is not an option. I still love the game no doubt about it but in my heart I also do not wish to make a return.

They say hurlers usually make great golfers, what with the natural swing and hand/eye co-ordination.

    Worth a shot!

(hee hee what a great pun, how devilishly clever or me!)

Well Im 24 and being honest, the type of sport honestly doesnt bother me, I already play bit of competitive snooker so I was thinking I will focus on that a bit but I suppose I would like a sport which involves exercise, preferably maybe a team sport, because hurling has left a huge gap there and I suppose in a way I would like something similar to replace it. So basicly Im open ot any sports and no I cant swim

Racquetball - a lot of former hurlers I know now play racquetball and some guys who still play hurling keep fit playing racquetball in the winter months,
Great competitive sport that can be played in the handball court.
