Skills Momentum Information Sessions letter

My housemate got a letter telling him that an appointment had been made for him for an information session on one of the Skills Momentum courses and was wondering what it entailed. I assume that it's simply an overview of what the course will entail and to gauge his interest in the course but he's worried that he may already have been signed up to the course. The course is in an area that he has no interest in and he tried ringing employment services but there was no answer.

Anyone know what the story with the information sessions is? Is it just that, a quick talk on the course or has he been signed up to do the course. If so, does he have to do the course or risk running into problem with his jobseeker payment.

Just to add, he's all for doing a course and upskilling but simply has no interest in the course that he has the appointment for.

Went on one of these Momentum up skilling courses with Wicklow VEC. Badly thought out course. Most of the people involved are good and well meaning but one in particular a rude horrible person. Overall this course was a total waste of my time.

Would love to know if anyone ever got a job from it.

I actually am doing one of these at the minute. My housemate refused to do it and dropped out after a week of it. I've been doing it for a month now and the course really is a waster of time. There's an hour and a half of study every evening which is ridiculous and obviously there simply to fill out the required hours. A lot of the lectures are really pointless and some of the exercises they ask you to do are somewhat insulting. Most of the people doing the course with me were given the choice to do the course or have their dole cut and while most are making the most of it a few just sit there looking annoyed all day. Some of the lecturers are really hard to like, one in particular treats everyone like they are in primary school and will give out if you are late or talk. On her first day she said that phones were not allowed and if you wanted to use the bathroom you raised your hand and ask permission. I had hoped it would be a little like college, where you are treated like an adult but sadly with some of them it's like you're 6 again. The biggest problem with these courses is the wide range of skills and as such a lot of the time is dedicated to helping those who aren't computer literate or haven't worked in years get a CV in order. That the DSP are forcing 60+ year old men and women to do the course is wrong. These should be aimed at people who have no 3rd level education or didn't finish secondary school and not people with degrees and lots of experience. I know that I've had some fun meeting new people and what not but by and large a lot of what I've heard is pretty basic common sense and while there are some interesting topics being discussed they are sadly hurried along and not looked at in any depth as the entire course is condensing an existing 6 month intensive course down into 3 so that you can take some business exam

I done an eBusiness course. Now you might believe that the name would suggest that the course would concentrate on learning about doing business on the internet and other related topics. Well there was a module that saw us preparing a website through HTML which was ok and another module which consisted of instructor putting powerpoint slides up on a screen and reading word for word from the screen. We also had lessons in how to work a (non digital) cash register, Role play on customer coming into a shop to buy a phone, Customer coming into a shop with a complaint yada yada yada. Oh yes and the infernal CV, cover letters and yawn yawn yawn. The amount of assignments was insane.
We also had a Careers Guidance person who came and gave a talk. She told us to make an appointment to see her for a one to one session. Biggest laugh ever. I emailed her to make an appointment and she never replied to anyone. What a waster she is.

Overall impression of this course. Terrible, Disorganised and A TOTAL WASTE OF MY TIME.
