My chain wont switch onto by biggest gear (smallest ring) on the back. I have a Giant Defy one. How do you adjust this? Thanks folks.

It's cable tension, a screw needs adjusting on the derailleur or there's a problem with the shifter.

Did it use to work and what changed?

Good youtube link Gretts 40oz. That's exactly what I was looking for. Just a couple of twists of the screw and problem sorted. That biggest gear should give me an extra couple of km/h on the flats. Thanks guys.

    This is so common,

When I had my giant defy I thought it was the end of the world when this happened,

didnt realise how simple the fix was, felt like a bit of a tit after i found out, I have always been reluctant to go near the derailure at all, just leave it, it will be grrrand

Just found this thread. I have exactly the same problem with my smallest cog and am now more confident at tackling a fix. Thanks for posting.

How much would it cost to get gears adjusted? My problems are not solved by just adjusting the screw.
    Thanks

Are you not willing to have a go at it yourself ? It's really not difficult at all, especially the rear. And it's good to know how to do.

If your problem is not solved by adjusting the screw, then you simply have to go back to the very start ie very simply - letting off the cable and manually setting the derailleur travel. Then re-attaching the cable and fine-adjusting with the barrel adjusters.

I had NO clue whatsoever, had to fit a new rear mech after a crash, and I have no problems whatsoever now with changing.

The front derailleur is more of a pain to get right, but that's more the fine tuning of it than actually setting it up.

If you want to have a go at it I will link you to the Youtube videos that I used.

This vid makes things look so easy, will have a go at it tomorrow on my bike, often have to drop two gears then slam the gear leaver back into the higher gears to get it to change, makeing gear changing a pain when come over a hill and looking to push on hard.

    Thanking you
