Quoting UN and government data, HRW said nearly 14% of Yemeni girls were married before the age of 15 and 52% before the age of 18. The group said many Yemeni child brides-to-be are kept from school when they reach puberty.

    Disturbing

.....nuking the country, thus killing the guilty and their victims, potential victims, the entirely innocent....yep, that's a plan.

Why having we nuked these countries yet?

because the irony of killing a lot of children to save said children isn't lost on us all.

traditionally, afaik, the 'bride's' father and mother and other family members wait for 'proof' the marriage is consummated. the marriage of an 8 yr old. consummated.
the mind boggles, if this story is real or not the 'marriage' of girls under 16 is prevalent in a lot of countries and this is happening right now somewhere.
I cant even comprehend a culture where the parents of a tiny child sits outside a room waiting for proof of their daughters marriage. There are no words for all the adults in that situation. but there is a common denominator - islam.

So all muslims believe in child marriage? Fascinating captain.

Maybe one day we could focus on the guilty, instead of just lashing out with vague generalisations.

Pity it's a picture of flower girls (probably the sisters of the grooms) escorting grooms to a mass wedding In Gaza where the men, aged from 18-25 were marying women aged 16-25, with the vast majority of the women being well over 18 and having been widowed.

Yeah i actually said the opposite of that. the common denominator in the child brides practice around the world is islam. ie those who marry off their female children are muslim not that all muslims are child rapists.

OT but Y'know I have always felt that way about first communions.

As pointed out above, pictures of girls in bridal outfits can be misleading.

Exactly, first communion almost identical tot he pictured scenario... There are peadophile s in every country religion etc... There is also anti Muslim propaganda churned out on a daily rate.. Really wish people would google stuff before passing it on for the more impressionable minds present to digest and regurgitate.

I read this last night.... Heart breaking!

Culture and social acceptance is a weird thing...
We condemn it being we assume the position of being enlightened, albeit we are from a country whereby priests systematically sodomised young boys...

But if you where born into that culture do you think you would be enlightened enough to stand up against it??

One who's been raised to believe the little girl has little value, and that it's culturally appropriate to marry one. No crime, nothing of importance, nothing to even be remotely concerned about.

I doubt he thinks of himself as a child rapist, since his wider culture is accepting of the practise.

NOT that I am saying this is condoned throughout Islam, just that it obviously is in some pockets.

To be honest, the title of the thread should be '8 Year Old Child Raped to Death'. At least it would be more honest, since she wouldn't have given informed consent to either marriage or to sex.

Well when there profit himself was paedophile of course it would be prevalent in the customs of those who follow

Was not in anyway shocked by this story.

I don't know which is more evil, what was done to the girl or the fact that so many are trying to cover it up.

It's hard to believe that any parent would willingly allow something like that to happen to their eight year old daughter, very scary.

Our religion teaches us women should be subservient to men, homosexuality is wrong and there is nothing wrong with a good stoning now and then, we may not practise this anymore but the majority of people are still up on a Sunday to go to mass!

    In essence religion is evil!

Actually the top countries are niger, chad, mali, Ethiopia, sierra leone, bangaldesh, and the predominant or majority religion is ??

It is more common in islamic cultures then in non-islamic ones would be a more correct statement i concede. but in the instances discussed thus far on this thread the common denominator remains islam.
    Your initial response remains wrong.
The thing is that this is a problem not only of gross immorality, pedophilia, inhumane treatment of another human being, degradation of girls and inequality but also it contributes to poverty, to future degradation of societies, to global over-population and to further inequality of the sexes.
It is no longer a factor in any progressive nation anywhere in the world and it is a mark of repressive regimes who maintain a patriarchal dehumanising hold over women through the religion of choice.
There were irish child marriages until fairly recently, in the traveller community until very recently, but they did tend to wait at least until after menstruation. And with the arrival of education, female education especially, they ended and no longer occur, except in traveller communities, the law ended it there as they would still practice it if they could. another paternalistic society ruled by a 6th century religion.

Article here, stating that the Iranians would like to lower the age to 9 !!

The legal affairs committee of parliament told the press that they regard the law that prohibits girls below the age of 10 from being married off to be "un-Islamic and illegal," referencing Islamic scripture to which describes the Prophet Muhammad -- the perfect example of all Muslims -- marrying a six-year-old bride, with whom he consummated the marriage when she was only nine years old.

Mohammad Ali Isfenani, the chairman for the legal affairs committee, said matter-of-factly: "As some people may not comply with our current Islamic legal system, we must regard 9 as being the appropriate age for a girl to have reached puberty and qualified to get married. To do otherwise would be to contradict and challenge Islamic Sharia law."

    update from Reuters,
they are going to prosecute :)

(Reuters) - Yemeni authorities are investigating the death of an eight-year-old girl from internal bleeding on her wedding night and will prosecute those responsible, the government said on Friday, a case that has rekindled international outrage over child brides.

An eight year girl who was married has died on the wedding night from internal hemorrhaging. She was married to a man five times her age.

I don't understand how this tradition is still prevalent today. I just can't get me head around a minor getting married at such a tender age and to think of what the poor thing creature went through that night. I have a child that age and my heart just breaks for that little girl.

Sick, depraved, disgusting, and defying belief.
I struggle to find words to describe my anger and my urge to do violence to the man, and any who would defend him of this "culture".

He's not wrong though. Islam is a common denominator in much of this issue. That isn't the same thing as saying ALL Muslims approve or condone it, and that is obviously not the case. I think you're inferring something unimplied.

To imply that it's not a problem with pockets of the Islamic world is disingenuous. To imply anyone who points that out is Islamophobic is unfair.

I'm no Islamophobe, but I've no problem saying that this particular practice is one facet of the ugliest face of Islam, just as institutionalised child abuse was a facet of the ugliest face of Christianity. It doesn't mean that the majority of practitioners of those religions aren't beautiful people.
