**** that means Eurosport and C4 will be blocked out on a sky box. Good thing I have gamepass.

Under the new agreement, Setanta will show 34 live games each season, 17 Sundays and 17 Mondays, plus other support programming and pre-season content.

Wonder will we get Monday night countdown?

Not too bothered by this as I got in Setanta/ESPN for college ball but will be disappointed to miss out on C4's coverage of SNF as they are excellent

When does this start from, this season or next?

How can they block these channels. People pay for these channels on sky.

So do people reckon C4 will be blocked?

UPC get a A PLUS for blocking sports we shall see !!

Someone speculated in another thread that it might only be blocked on Sky via the Electronic Program Guide. So you may still be able to access the raw satellite feed via the 'Other Channels' (free to air) option. There's a lot of 'ifs' in there but fingers crossed...

So we could lose the Channel 4 HD and Eurosport HD coverage on Sky? That's a load of **** of true. Is this for this year? Any links or details?

Thanks. Hopefully we'll be ok on Sky. Setanta have had rights to events that were on UK terrestial before and we could still watch them on ITV e.g FA Cup.

Where does it say channels will be blocked? I they don't block champions league on other channels when they show games so can't imagine this will be any different.

Setanta Ireland comes with standard upcoming anyway, plus channel 4 is fta anyway.

I don't think sky digital customers would be affected its us with the UPC that would more likely suffer . Eurosports one hour highlights of MNF are very handy hate to lose them to just a whole replay of game on setanta . Anyway what ever happens we are spoilt for coverage here even though for maximum enjoyment you do pay enough for it .

Setanta have been known to have Soccer blocked on ESPN. Both Setanta and ESPN showed Uefa cup and both generally showed the same games. When that happened ESPN would be blocked out as Setanta Ireland held the Irish rights to the game. Same thing could happen here. You can almost guarantee Setanta will look into it as it would mean more potential customers to them. And this was on Sky boxes.

Yeah I remember that happening alright. The only difference here is that Channel 4 is free to air. I've never heard of a FTA channel being blocked.

Channel 4 do geo block some shows due to rights issues.

Terrible news for Irish AF fans if true and Setanta do block Ch4 and Eurosport. I have Gamepass, but I believe those games are blacked out until the fiollowing day - so even that can't be used to watch games live, (unless I go via a VPN) and certainly not in HD with my barely passable broadband.

We also lose the HD broadcast and and get SD from Setanta - not to mention we'd miss Ch4 analysis - which I enjoy watching the most. They also take less ad breaks for the SNF game. All in all a bad day for Irish AF fans - most lose out on two of the marquee games of the weekend, and none of us gain anything with this development.

(Maybe it won't be blocked, but I can't see what would be in it for Setanta do bid for the games and devote coverage with the same game being aired on free channels in Ireland)

Setanta have an established history of stupidly purchasing rights to sports which are available on other channels.

Remember the huge deal made over F1 moving from RTE? A damp squib as people just watched on UTV/ITV.

Setanta Ireland is on the standard package on UPC and they also have a HD channel, Channel 4 is on FTA anyway pretty much anyone can watch that too.

If it's blocked by Sky and you don't have Setanta, and you can't get Eurosport and you don't get gamepass and you are not bothered with getting a cheap FTA box, then yes, you might have a problem and be in the same position as last year. Complete disaster.

Don't understand the problems of everyone on this thread to be honest.

Also those games are not blacked out on gamepass, you would think someone who has gamepass would know that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,608 ✭✭✭themont85

The issue is if it is blocked.

Irish people will be expected to pay for a Sky Sports sub and a Setanta pack. That is expensive and shocking in comparison to the UK.

To follow your team completely add in the Gamepass cost. Don't Sky now have blackouts in Ireland for GP?

It is better than the years when Five had late games and the Internet was poor and Five was unavailable to most of Ireland (before they went FTA).

We'll wait and see but I wont hold my breath with NFLUK behind it.

Not sure I see this blackout on C4 & Eurosport happening.
Setanta & BBC (for half the season, anyway now that Sky entered the picture) both show live F1 races & there is no blackout on the BBC. Don't see why it would be any different with C4 showing live NFL.

Sky and the BBC share the rights to F1 and most likely have an agreement in place. The comparison is not the same.

Granted C4 is on free to air and one can go to the other channels to find it but the non free to air channel on the line up will most likely be blocked. They block normal tv shows due to rights so im guessing sports will be the same.

Eurosport havent ever really clashed with anyone but I wouldn't be surprised if Setanta Ireland push for the blocks.

Its all about money and you just know Setanta did it to try bag more customers in Ireland and try get them to sign up. Of course they will try push their weight on regional restrictions if it means blocking out competitors.

The problem here is with a sky box you will miss games depending on how much you can afford. Anyone saying it isnt a problem to people it really is if people are going from free football to the possibility of only having C4 on the other channels on free to air.

Well I wasn't talking about about Skys and BBC's agreement.
Its just in years past even before Sky bought rights into it, both Setanta & BBC simultaniously showed live F1 without the blocking issue coming up.

Anyway all will be revelaed on Sunday night, so just going hope nothing changed.

Damn that weather delay. I even added on an extra hour on the DVR but i still missed the end of the game.

Just goes to show the folly of channel 4 not showing highlights on Monday . Setanta as far as I know are showing the whole game again today .

Did setanta have any production value last night or was it just the us feed of game without any presenters for when game stalled?

No input from the states. They just went to ads or features about some of their soccer presenters. I was watching on the DVR so I don't know what they were on about but there were interviews with pat Nevin, John Hartson and Matt Holland etc.

Just an FYI for Eircom customers. Setanta Ireland is free online through the Eircom site. Just in case you were stuck.

Just checking ahead of the Bears game tomorrow night but did Sky block Channel 4 last week. Don't want to set the box to record and all i get is three hours of blue screen.
