    Does anyone know of software that will create a letter head that can be stored on the pc. Each time you want to write a hard copy letter the program will open a blank letterhead

    I know Word will do a letter head but I am not sure it will do that and would prefer some other

    Any word processor will do it.
    Word will do it
    Open Office will do it
    Google Docs will do it.

    A letter head is just a document with words and maybe an image on it.

    Word is almost certainly the best option. Why don't you want to use it?

    Simple way: Save it to a document called "letterhead". Any time you need a new one, open that document and save it as something else before editing it.

    The other way is to create a template

    No, it won't:
    • Create your letterhead in Word
    • Save it as lh.doc (or whatever)
    • The next time you want to create a document with a letterhead, open lh.doc
    • Save it as document1.doc
    lh.doc should never be saved to again (unless you're changing your letterhead). Any new documents created from it should always be saved as something else

    Save it as ODF in OO.org, then?

    Don't forget to search the OO.org templates site for resources like this.

    Here's an example of a letterhead for OpenOffice you can customise - http://templates.openoffice.org/en/template/boy-scouts-letterhead

    No. Don't save it as a document. Save it as a document template. *.dot
    This means it will show up as a new template when you select. FILE -> NEW.
    Im just not sure where templates are stored.

    Assuming OO and LibreOffice haven't forked too far then Yes, it will do it.

    In LibreOffice:

    To create the template:
    Create the letterhead as a writer document.
    File->Templates->Save
    Give it a name and put it in a category in the resulting dialog box

    To create a new document:
    File->Templates and Documents
    Click Templates and select the category where you put your template.
    Click the template that you created.

    The blank document appears. Really simple and very effective.

    Word does them nicely too. I had occasion to change someone from Word to LibreOffice recently and the template was something they needed for their business letterhead. It works fine.

    :confused: I said if you save a document with a new name, it won't overwrite the original file

    Or you could right click on the LH document and go into Properties and tick Read Only. Then it can't be overwritten, but you will get prompted to save it as something else.
