I'm from Norn Iron but not a bike fan at all. However I've saw loads if stuff on you tube and tv about yer man and I'm amazed at most of it.

He was revered around the world as being top of what one could argue is the most dangerous sport in the world today. I don't even feel safe watching it. (North West 200 for me) its a wonder these guys don't av a side car to hold their ginormous balls.

My opinion on greatest sportsperson is that they need to have been involved in sports that are truly international, played by millions and highly competitive.
And while motor racing has its merits I wouldn't compare his achievements as favourably as the likes of Roy Keane or Padraig Harrington in football or golf.

    Kevin O' Flanagan?
Kevin O'Flanagan, is a former Irish sportsman, physician and sports administrator. An outstanding all-rounder, he represented his country at both soccer and rugby union. He was also a noted sprinter and long jumper and as a youth played Gaelic football. In his spare time he also played golf and tennis at a decent level. O'Flanagan played soccer for among others, Bohemians and Arsenal, and as an international he played for both Ireland teams – the FAI XI and the IFA XI. O'Flanagan also played rugby union for UCD, London Irish and Ireland.
    Sports administrator and doctor

O'Flanagan returned to Dublin in the 1950s and established a successful practice at Upper Fitzwilliam Street. He briefly revived his soccer career with Bohemians and remained involved in sport throughout the rest of his life. During subsequent decades he served on numerous bodies and held various positions in the areas of sports and medicine. These include:
    • President of the Irish Sports Medicine Association:
    • Chairman of the Irish National Rehabilitation Board

Always wondered where the nickname 'Packie' came from?

Best two sportsmen from the island of Ireland were IMO Joe Dunlop (1) and George Best (2).

Packie isn't a nickname, it's a common derivation of Patrick in Donegal

I was there myself and fcuk me the bikes were really moving.

I have only saw the practice laps on the nw 200 and you really need to experience it live to see how mad the riders are. When I say they are going fast it is like something out of a ps3 game only game over in this can and will mean death.

The average speed is mind numbing around public roads. Valentino rossi thinks the road racers are nuts Ffs. Brick walls, barb wire, telegraph polls all on b class roads at 200 mph at times. Mad.

I don't know if he's the best Irish sportsman but he must be up there. Rad up about his charity exploits as well. Unlike a lot of modern day sportsmen his head wasn't up his own arse either.

In his chosen sport he was but there are other sports people from the island of Ireland who had more success.

Martin Jessop hit a record 208mph on his Ducati Superbike there a few years ago.The downloaded data from his superbike showed the back wheel was spinning up at that speed and they rekon he was doing around 213mph.But 208mph was officialy registered/recorded.

BBC followed Joey over to Romania,Belarus and other parts of Eastern Europe to the orphanages.

He drove there and back himself in his van on many occasions to bring the orphaned kids and their carers the vital goods, supplies and toys that they needed.

He got an OBE for all his charity work.

On 31 December 2009 Joey Dunlop was voted 3rd greatest Irish sportsperson ever.

An absolute legend on and off the road race circuits.:D
