Quick query on the NCT

    Guys,
Bit of a daft one, but bear with me.!

I was thinking about the NCT and the requirement that if you don't get your car tested when the current cert expires, the new test cert is backdated.

I.E. ; My cars test ran out April 13, but I'm only testing it now (Sept 13), So my new cert only takes me up to April '14. Which is fine and makes sense.

What happens if for some reason, I don't get around to testing it until Feb or March 14. Does that mean, in theory I will be given a cert for 1/2 months and be required to test it again in April 14?

What happens if I don't test it at all when it expired in April '13, and just arrive in in April '14 for an NCT. Will I get a full years cert then if I pass??

To try to avoid any side debates/arguments this query is purely hypothetical. My car has a valid NCT test until 03/15. For the purposes of my hypothetical scenario I am not really considering the insurance or legal implications of driving without an NCT.
I have also assumed a car that is only entitled to 1 year cert.

I am purely wondering from an NCT point of view.

I hope I have explained the above ok!!

If you test it next year you'll get a full year.

If you test it in February '14 for example then the 3 month rule will come into play and you will get a cert until April '15. In other words you don't need a valid NCT for the 3 month rule to apply.

    IMO it doesn't make sense.
Vehicle test is not a tax, so why should it be backdated.
If normally you get cert valid for 1 year, there's no reason for giving certs valid for shorter period, just because someone didn't do test when it expired. (car could have been off the road and test was not needed).

Having a system like this is bad.

    No.
You can do test up to 90 days before due date, so f.e. if your test due date comes on 15 April, then you can do test from 15th January.
Fact that you didn't have a valid test for last year, is irrelevant.

    Yes.
