Why not call here Southern Ireland?

Would it not be handier to call the Rep of Ireland Southern Ireland instead of Ireland. It would then be Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. Its descriptive and easy for people from the rest of the world to get their head around.

We earned our right to be called a Republic.

But we're the Republic (Which we, as a nation fought long and hard for). Ireland is the whole Island.

Because that would be playing into the hands of Cork people.

Dev purposely called the country Ireland as a way of passive aggressively claiming the north.

Because thats what the Brits call it.

because the Republic of Ireland is still in the north.

'Southern' just sounds nicer. A bit like 'western' or 'upper'. 'Republic' is a bit council estate.

The Backwards man would not be amused. He'd be living in Southern Ireland despite living more northerly than the vast majority of the people in the north.

First of all, there is no country called "The Republic of Ireland" except by UEFA and FIFA.

The country is called Ireland or Eire.

The Country of Ireland is part of the Island of Ireland.

Northern Ireland is the north east corner of the Island of Ireland and a different state to the country called Ireland.

    TL;DR.

    The Island = Ireland
    The 26 counties = Ireland
The 6 Counties = Northern Ireland.

Southern Ireland was the proposed name of the 26 counties within a two-state Northern Ireland / Southern Ireland Home Rule solution to the Irish question in the 1920s. That's why it sounds faintly derogatory to Irish ears as it implies a continuing connection to the UK. As far as I know anyway.

Northern Ireland is only 6 counties in the North East, everything that isn't North East isn't South. The most Northerly point on the island is in the Republic, the The most Westerly point on the island is in the Republic and also the most Southerly point on the island is in the Republic. We're hardly just "Southern Ireland".

If the island was divided roughly in half, yes Northern and Southern Ireland would make sense but as it stands, it's just stupid.

    You are pronouncing it wrong.

    It's "Suvvern Island"

What about the east, the west or the north don't forget Donegal.

Southern Ireland us a stupid name, lets just stick to calling the North the occupied territory

With Donegal in Southern Ireland being more Northerly than any county in Northern Ireland?
Anyway, the official name of this state is just Ireland, not the Rep of Ireland.

Very very few countries refer to another country geographically in their name, South Sudan is the only official one I can think of.

Former East and West Germany: No, these were DDR and BRD respectively (not the Ost-Deutsche Demokratische Republik or the Bundesrepublik Westdeutschland.

North and South Korea: Nope again, the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea and Republic of Korea. Both peoples call themselves "Korean".

Former North and South Vietnam: Same as above.

We have the trademark on the name "Ireland" for the sovereign state, why should we change?

When the Brits secede from the EU we should go with them, and the whole shebang should be called The United Kingdom of Eng-y-land-Nyaaah, Deep Fried Mars-Bar Land, Norn Ironistan, No-one Gives A Sh!t About Wales Boyo, and The Peoples Democratic Protectorate of Caaark, Like.

but then people coming to the north finding it ruled by the brits would assume the whole island is the same, the only way to solve the problem is change the flags and hang the tri colour over belfast.:)

A lot of people I came across in the UK used the term Southern Ireland when I lived there. People would ask me where I was from and I'd say Ireland the next question would usually be Northern or Southern Ireland.

The Constitution does say the name of the State is Eire or Ireland but the official description of the State is indeed "Republic of Ireland".

It's a bit confusing really, you can't be faulted for saying any of them but you'll definitely get a few weird looks if you casually refer to the 26 counties as Eire..

So as far as the Oireachtas is concerned, contrary to Article 4, this is not Ireland but the Republic of Ireland. It's not just FIFA and UEFA.

The section only provides a description of the State moving from a monarchy to a republic. The name is unchanged at Ireland.
Costello said at the time ,
"If I say that my name is Costello and that my description is that of senior counsel, I think that will be clear to anybody who wants to know. If the Senator will look at Article 4 of the Constitution she will find that the name of the State is Éire. Section 2 of this Bill declares that "this State shall be described as the Republic of Ireland." Its name in Irish is Éire and in the English language Ireland. Its description in the English language is "the Republic of Ireland."."

Judge Brian Walsh said that, "if the courts of other countries seeking the assistance of this country are unwilling to give this State its constitutionally correct and internationally recognised name, then in my view, the warrants should be returned to such countries until they have been rectified."

It's the UK that call us the Republic of Ireland.
