Getting the Parent(s) to give up fags

Hi, My mother smokes in the house and as far as I'm concerned its vile, the smell lingers around the place and basically irritates my nose etc. I have been dropping hints along with the rest of the family but she won't even try quitting anymore. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? The smell in the house is the least of the worries, she's in her 50's and been smoking since teenage years. I feel helpless as she doesn't seem to listen.

Accept it. She's a smoker. And she'll die a smoker.

Not a thing you can do about it.

I am moved out, but its that my dad is a non smoker, and is exposed to this second hand smoke every evening.

Get her an ecig, less smell, no smoke and cheaper!
She like smoking so this might work as a replacement for fags, it won't get her as far as nicotine abstinent but that wont kill her or anyone else.
Go read the Vaping sub forum in the giving up smoking forum.

Does she not know how bold it is to smoke? They should print warnings on the boxes or something.

Seriously, the only way she will quit is if she wants to. No amount of hint dropping will change that. It's not as easy to stop smoking as you seem to think it is, especially after 30+ years.

Smoke drug cigarettes in the house. That'll teach her.

Tell her you have asthma now, that'll do it

Your opening post suggests your main concern is for yourself. Your mams smoking is her own business, if your ickle nose is effected avoid the house; it's not your house. Simples.

As an ex smoker (and I smoked for over 20 years) I can tell you that you can't make your mother give them up, she needs to do that for herself. I personally think you should back off, she obviously knows your opinion. Be supportive if she wants to give up, find out about NRT etc, if (and only if) she wants you to. That's all you can do. Stop being the bane of her life. She knows how bad smoking is for her health and for your father's health.

there is tablets and all now that u can get off the doctor to help u give up i know they worked for a good few people. hardly any cravings or anything.but if the person doesnt want to give up theres no point taking them.

When I smoked I would have! I used to smoke filling the car with petrol back when stuff like that was normal.

Cig smoke doesn't put off smoke alarms, good idea as a fire precaution though !

Get your mother on an electric cigarette, my mam has been on it a year and has converted a number of relatives of mine too, as well as my dad, you can use them to cut down or quit altogether.

They are a lot cleaner as the smoke doesn't have the many toxins that a cigarette has. No smell of them at all really. The smoke is more of a vapour, my mam, dad, some aunts and uncles and my nan are using it. My mam more than any swear by them and she has been a smoker for 30 years.

You can buy them at some local markets depending on where you live (perhaps ask around), but online is a bit cheaper and they dispatch them quite quickly and do good deals on refill liquids. Its not quite like anything she would have used before as my folks gave up many times using gum, patches, and all that other nicorette shyte. You can also use intellicig electric cigarettes but the battery life on them suck so I would stick with the ones on the site below.

You can't stop someone from smoking. I, my husband, my dad and my mum all smoked. My mum is 60 and she's the only 1 of us who still smokes. She doesn't want to quit and she won't, it's her life, she's an adult and as such can make her own decisions, realistically if you don't want to live in a house that smells of cigarette smoke, well then you're going to have to move out.

My mother just started smoking again after 25 years off them. im not even going to bother trying to get her to stop at this stage. besides im in no position to be telling other people what substances they shouldnt put in their body

I hate smoking OP, I find it vile too.. but unfortunately, unless she wants to give them up then you're really wasting your time.. I feel sorry for your Dad having to breath in the smoke.. not nice..

Has he expressed a dislike for it? Or is he happy enough with the situation?
