    So anybody doing the Blacksod?

Was my first olympic distance race a number of years ago so I've a bit of a soft spot for it so going to start and end my season with that race ;)

Love the rolling cycling on pretty straight roads and the testing run course.

If its sunny: I'll be the fat lad trying to get into his wetsuit
If its cold, wet, windy : I'll be the fat lad that Liam Dolan and a dwarf are trying to force into a wetsuit.

I'm in - have done this race the past 2 years, great one to end the season.

I've signed up to do this one for the first time, heard it's a great event but what's this about a man with a shotgun? Hope it's not used to hurry us slow people up...

    From the race briefing
At the start competitors must be no more than waist depth in the water

Poor JB, he's going to be 100m down before the race even starts.

As far as I know the session is on Friday night. JB has been trying to get me to come for pints on Friday anyway. Himself Tunney and LCD are off elsewhere on Saturday to continue the stag and I haven't had much joy finding accommodation on the Saturday night either so I'm settled on the idea of the long drive back after the race. Pints in the city could happen Sat eve though.

PS: nothing less than a podium for you young Fazz.

Jesus, why didn't you let us know it was Tunneys stag, we would have reserved a phone box for the party.

Booze the nite before!! You dedicated to the session party sons of b1tches.

Think the hotel had space if you call - not sure.
Bound to be some cancellations also around I'd say.
    - will be down the Sat nite anyway with a few others if you change plans.
Must meet up the Fri evening anyway for a bit to catch up with all.

As for podium, I do feel legs coming around so will give it all I got.
No idea of entry list but expect the fast Westside massive to be in no doubt as well! Sounds a great race so looking forward to it.

I hope the weather improves for the weekend. The West coast has been taking a battering of wind and rain since Saturday night. Winds have dropped thankfully.

Looked at the weather on Met.ie and right now they are projecting it to be pretty warm, about 14 degrees, a little drizzle at times and a tail wind on the outward leg of the bike.

We've all raced in a lot of worse weather than that.

    Enjoyed that thanks.

Absence has made you soft man....
Roads look grand to me. Give it welly and we all try chase down Thornton.

    I was always soft :pac:

To be fair, I'd only watched the first couple of minutes of the video when I made that comment. That surface along the dual-cabbageway is pretty dodgy, but the rest looks ok. Hopefully they've finished the resurfacing works.

As for chasing down Thornton, I'll leave that to guys like you who have done some training this year. :D

    Sandbagging of the highest order!!!!!

Jeez, KT has done a fair amount of racing this season. Good luck with hunting him down :D

Best of luck tomorrow folks. Glorious day here in Galway so I hope it's the same a little further west.

Fair play to Kilmore tri club for marking out the course clearly in advance.

Managed to get here with a bit of daylight left and a bit of course recce.

What a great course it is! Looking forward to tomorrow. Can see why it has a great rep, even if it is blooming miles away and further than lost sheep.
Watch out for loose cattle on the run :)

Off to find rego now in a bit and hopefully bump into a few here.

Swim times seem faster than usual for 1.5km?

Course short maybe? Anybody with a Garmin measure it?

The wind was mostly against us on the swim leg so not gaining any(marginal) advantage from that, doubt there is much of a current going on there either but surprised at some of the times.

    I Clocked it at 1.35km.

Thornton and Harris swam 16:30 - so add another say 2:00 if 1.5km would be a near 18:30 min 1.5km swim which is about right with the chop against us for most of the cross section.
The strong swimmers seem to gain a bit more in conditions like that relative to others due to experience/skills I imagine.
The frustrating part is in conditions like that the fish can still hold their pace from the pool whereas I go backwards.

A lovely winter ahead for me in the pool :D

Fran had it at 1.35 as well. I had it as 1.45 but given my lack of open water swimming that would be down to sighting. And jelly fish. No one mentioned the jelly fish.

    Good race. Good time.

I think this race would be so much better if it was in the middle of the summer. Very kilkee like and worth the full weekend trip.

A club mate got a nasty sting from a Jelly on his neck. Pictures looked nasty when I saw them on FB

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75 ✭✭kchsligo

Clocked the swim at 1.38k but that is long given my inability to swim straight combined with the amount of time I spent looking to avoid jellyfish as I'd gotten stung on the cheek & nose fairly early into things...

Bike course was advertised as 43k but thankfully I clocked that as closer to 40k - that wind on the way back in was heartbreaking.

Aside from the road surface on the early bike hill it was a nice event with a lovely meal afterwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,584 ✭✭✭✭tunney

Clocked it at 1.48km mainly to do with horrific sighting!

    Good race, enjoyed it.

    Pity about the drafting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭toomuchdetail

Great race : Clocked the swim at 1.38km with Jelly fish sting. (28mins)
Bike was tough , I wasnt expecting the hill after 1.5km , misjudged the gradient and ground to a halt and had to walk 200m as I couldnt get back on the bike but thats my fault(felt like a tit too) . Very fast decent on bad roads (terrible spill from 1 female on the decent). Great spin into Belmullet but the return journey ... well thats another story,it was like been on a turbo at times , loads of spinning with minimal movement , the 5k between 30-35k seemed to go on for 45mins. I also seen a few drafting as they passed me on the way out as I was going into Belmullet , I think 1-2 were DSQ at the end over it which is right .(1.24 on the bike)
Run was tough but for me it was always going to be , cramped on the downhill after 3k but was fine after that. (55mins) Very well organised by Kilmore , clear information , clear race briefing , well marshalled and a great spread afterwards . Nice location but I think there is a small section of road that should be reviewed for safety.
It felt more like Blackdeath than Blacksod at times but I will definatley will be back next year with a little more specific training in the legs .
