My friends '01 320ci is using about a litre of oil a week just doing a short school run. Just passed NCT and rocker gasket and an oil filter housing gasket have been changed but still it disappears. Any other common leaks. No smoke, spark plugs are clean and only 100k miles on it so I presume it's not burning the oil. He says it's the N52 engine.

That is weird, the oil has to go somewhere.
    Nothing on the ground underneath?

No, there's no obvious signs of a leak anywhere. Very odd alright. A litre a week parked in the same spot would surely be making a mess. Reading up on it they do burn oil but that a litre every 1000 miles would be normal oil consumption for that engine. Not a BM head so not sure on that, but his is loosing 1l in less than 100 miles.

Crankcase vent (PCV), maybe? In that case it may only be blowing the oil while running/moving.

    What ^ he said.
Mine used to use a bit but never a litre a week. Even the oft quoted litre per 1000 miles/kilometres sounds excessive and would be an absolute worst case scenario IMO. I had my PCV changed and it barely uses a drop these days. YMMV but have a listen for a faint whistling sound around 1800 rpm on a very light throttle. That was the symptom that led to my vent valve getting changed. The drop in oil consumption was an unexpected bonus.
