Hideous lines of dead pixels all down the left side. At first it would only happen sometimes on parts of the screen but it got a bit of a slap against the glovebox in the car and now its like this constantly. It looks fine on another monitor. Should I just replace the screen, or could it be the connectors/cable that are damaged?

Interestingly the lines change colour depending on what I have open on the usable part of the screen e.g. a mostly white page like a Word document would cause the dead pixels directly opposite it to change. Before it got the slap the lines would ONLY show up if I had something white open

For a time i could put pressure on a spot near the connector and it would become normal again as long as i kept the pressure there, but that doesnt even work anymore. I tried reseating the connectors too. I've already taken it apart a bunch of times so i can easily slot in a new screen, but i dont know if that will actually solve it. Does it look like a problem with the screen itself rather than the cable? I dont want to buy a screen and find thats not the problem so I ask for the help of someone who knows what this might be

Edit: Another thing i forgot to mention was at the top of the lines where the colour is thicker, that portion of the lines shows up even on the boot screen when the screen is completely black and the rest of the lines are invisible

The pixels are not dead, screen is probably fine. Looks more like the connector or the soldering on the mainboard or the cable itself.

Do you see this pattern at the POST screen too or only in Windows after the driver is loaded?

What's the story with an external monitor? In Safe Mode?

The bits at the top where the colour is thicker show up as soon as I power on the laptop but thats all that shows up.
It works fine on a PC monitor so its not a software problem i dont think. I didnt try it in safe mode as it looked fine in normal mode.
Are the connectors for most screens all the same? If i got access to another screen I could plug it into my cable and see if its the same story

If it works on an external monitor, the GPU can be ruled out.

As for your options, you can try with a replacement but that wouldn't help if the connector itself or the part where it is soldered onto mainboard is damaged.

Ill have to keep an eye out for a spare screen i can try it with. If it is the connector or the mainboard is that repairable or is it goodbye laptop? Its probably beyond my expertise. Sorry for the delayed response, i appreciate your help

Even if it is beyond economical repair, you might still find some use for it. Depending on the specs, you can use with an external monitor mouse and keyboard as a desktop PC.

I'm using an Eee PC 1005HA with cracked screen here as a server on my home network. Running 24/7 for more than 2 years now, very easy on the ESB bill. ;)
