Transfer UCD to NUIG

So I got my first choice in UCD, which was computer science, but now that I'm here I hate it. My house mates are absolutely terrible, I'm not too fond of the course so far and I know nobody here. All my friends are in Galway, including my boyfriend who was meant to go to UCD too but didn't get his first choice. It's really big here and unwelcoming and unfriendly, making it really hard to make new friends. To be honest I'm absolutely miserable. I'm depressed and I cry most nights. I got 555 points in the leaving so I have the entry requirements, so I'm just wondering is there any way I can transfer to Galway now that they've just started? I've never wanted anything so badly in all my life and I'd do anything. If anyone knows anything please reply, thanks. :(

I think you may be just suffering from the shock of being away from home and everyone you know. My advice would be to give it some time and see however I'm aware that you have very limited time because term starts today in Galway and the free fees thing has something like a 2 week limit. If I were you I'd call the admissions office in Galway and also the college of science, they will tell you if they actually have any room in the course. I would presume that it is full however, that course is in demand right now. If they can't accomodate you then you will have to study in UCD which hearing from my friends that are in final year there is a really good place to be, they made friends after some time of going to society meetings and nights out and stuff so don't despair, these things take time. Plus you can always come home at the weekends.... you're only 2 hours away... I'm over 3000 miles away and felt a lot of what you're feeling but I had no choice to stick it out for my time away, you learn to like it.

It can't be that bad, surely. Do you like the physical college? What's wrong with your housemates? are you talking to other people in your course? I know it's really difficult to make friends when in big lecture halls but give a society or club meeting a go, I met many of my best friends through them. Don't forget that you can always look for new housemates next year, you could probably even move in with friends you make this year for next year. If you were back in Galway would you be living at home? I imagine accom is hard to get in Galway right now. it's a lot more fun living away from home trust me!

I've been on the UCD campus a few times and I found it pretty impressive. There's a fair few more facilities compared to NUIG.

I know someone that moved from NUIG to UCD after first year so you may have to wait until the end of the year but it could be possible. Worth contacting the college to see.

I was quite unhappy with my college last year, but I was advised to stick it out for first year. I have now just transferred into 2nd year of Computer Science in NUIG. Starting a new course from the start wasn't an option for me as I wouldn't receive a grant. It's always another option to look into if you can't change this year.

Moving to college is big big shock to everyone not matter where the college is.
My house mates are absolutely terrible

You could consider moving but what makes the horrible ?
    I know nobody here.
Just sit down and start talking to people. I know I did and I am still friends with a lot of them 23 years later! (btw I was fairly quite and shy in school. I was totally different in college)

    Join societies, clubs etc.
really big here and unwelcoming and unfriendly
Yup its a big change but although they might not show it everyone else is feeling the same.
All my friends are in Galway, including my boyfriend
Really bad reason to change. Most likely in the next four years you will change a lot and those who you think are life long friends (based on school) will no longer be the same and be lifelong friends. It also very possible that you will drift away from your boyfriend.

I felt the same about Nuig when I started and wanted to move to Nuim, but I was told to wait until after first year...but then by the time I got to the end of first year I loved Nuig! I think it is just the shock of moving away and the fact that it is a whole new experience! Stick it out, everything will be fine! The first 2/3 months are always overwhelming!

DeeTee, which college did you do 1st year in? I'm in 1st year Law in NUIG and I really like it. The only issue is that my home in Dublin is within walking distance of UCD and my parents aren't too fond of paying for my accommodation here in Galway for another 2 years when they wouldn't have to if I was in Dublin and I myself can't afford to. I didn't get the entry requirements for UCD but if I can transfer I will. Did you get the entry requirements for NUIG? Did you have to get a 2.1 or a 1.1 in your 1st year exams in your original college?
    Thanks :)

I was in LYIT for 1st year, doing a similar course to what I'm doing now. It depends on the individual college but in general you need to meet the entry requirements to be considered. There was no specific grade to get in the first year exams but your marks do need to be fairly good. I'd try contacting the admissions office in UCD to see what the transfer process is there.

Thank you for your swift reply DeeTee, I can see how points would be a problem alright. When did NUIG confirm your place, did you have to show them your 1st year exam results? Hopefully if I do well they'd take that into account. I know because UCD & NUIG are both part of the NUI umbrella group, their courses are very similar and there is quite a lot of transferring between the two and Cork & Maynooth. Thanks for the info anyway & I hope your Christmas exams went well.

Yeah they need a transcript of all your first year results as well as your leaving cert. They were able to make a decision by the end of July, although sometimes it can be early August.

    Thanks DeeTee, appreciate the info!
