Has anyone had the experience of working on a cruise ship?

I was listening to a podcast today about life on cruise ships: http://www.causticsodapodcast.com/2013/08/18/cruise-ships/

They talked a bit about working life on a cruise ship, and how you're either working or piss drunk partying with the rest of the crew with $1 beers in the crew bar. Sounds like it would be fun to do for a few months just for all the stories you'd get, places you'd be able to travel too and people you'd meet.

    Anyone here done it? Stories?

My friend worked on a cage fighter cruise once.

Their slogan was the best. MMA Cruises - we put the bruisin' into cruisin'

Adam Curtis had a good entry on his blog about cruise ships and their history, which is a good (but very long) read overall.

To get to the relevant bit for you though, search the page for 'Alina' and watch the (really great) documentary clip on her just below that; it can be an incredibly overworked/stressful job:

The Captain of the Costa Concordia would say it's not worth the risk waving at your friends,

Jon Robson's book Lost at Sea talks a bit about cruise ship life and the disproportionate amount of staff that go missing while on board. Very weird stories indeed.
On the flip side of all that,I have several friends who worked on cruise ships and loved every second!

A friend of mine worked on a cruise ship last Summer on a whim as he didn't want to sit around for the Summer. Met some bird from the UK and is now living happily over there with herself and doesn't seem to be coming back any time soon..
