When people call people "f*****s"

Isn't it sad in these modern times that the word has become the norm in banter between friends. It is such a derogatory term and certainly offensive to any gay person. But it's something I hear every day.

If anyone calls you a ******, punch them in the head. They'll think twice about calling you it again.

They'd be well within their rights to then call you a ****.

over sensitive people I say. I say it the whole time and never mean it as a direct insult to homosexual people.

Its like how the word "bástard" is never used as literally.
same can be said for most swear words.

Meh, I dunno if it's the norm, certainly I don't think it's a derogatory as you think, if anything the gay society have claimed back a lot of the words that once would have been more of a slur in the past. Queer springs to mind as one. Either way, words are words, it's people that give words their power. For example the n word when I comes to black people. That word still has power because people (myself included) wouldn't dream of using it in a public forum. Also note the word 'cu*t', that word has no power here or the uk, but in America it's still on the far extreme of swear words.

Genuine question. Do you think that if the use of the word as banter was not seen as offensive that gradually the word '******' wouldn't be associated with the gay community and they would be free of the offensive term? Words change so maybe '******' could too?

That's probably a naive question but I'm just curious.

It says more about the person using the word really. Pig ignorant morons.

I blame EMINEM. Its all his fault! Turning our youth homophobic. His albums should be banned. Uses the F*G word way too much and corrupting our youth.

Oh come off it. I call people ******s all the time, it's not meant in a derogatory term to homosexuals when I use it anyway.

EDIT: To add to it OP if you are "offended" by the word well I genuinely feel sorry for you that it would actually bother you than much.

I'm sorry but you can't say that calling someone a ****** isn't derogatory. You must be living under a big rock if you think there is nothing wrong with it. And it bothers me with right reason.

Ah... the "lighten up" brigade have arrived.

So we have ignorant AND patronizing to boot.

If we happened be in the same room, you standing near enough so I could overhear you use that word in conversation I would take a look at you and remember you as someone to avoid. I'm not being nasty to you about it, I'd have you judged as an ignorant an offensive person and would want nothing to do with you.

Don't bother feeling sorry for me, because I wouldn't be interested in the opinion of someone like you anyway.

It's not like the word's modern context evolved out of a vacuum. There's a history of prejudice attached to that phrase. You can't just ignore that and say it's not derogatory. Unless you're actually calling people a bundle of sticks to light a fire.

What do you suggest he should do exactly? The kind of people that use the word aren't likely to be approachable about it. More than likely would be told to 'fuck off and lighten up", and that would probably be the nicer outcome.

I really can't imagine an apology for causing offense, do you? It takes a certain degree of ignorance to call someone that.

    I have 2 ideas;
    1) Ask them to stop
    2) Ride them up the hole. Make them what they hate.

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so ****ing what.” - Stephen Fry

You've omitted the detail I put into approaching someone on the matter. I think you know that I am right and that is why you didn't respond to it. It is highly unlikely that asking someone to stop using the word is going to go well.

I'm thinking anal rape mighn't be the best approach either.

I wouldn't actually refer to a gay person as a ******. But if one of my friends was being a bitch I'd call him it. Like I wouldn't call a black person a n****r but id say to a friend "wats up my n***a".

Or if I got called white piece of trash by a black person I would retaliate with some not so nice derogatory words. But then I'm the racist :-( and that has happened to me before.

No it's not, my gay pal calls us all ******s and queers all the time.

When I was 8 me and my friends used a lot of words we didnt know the meaning to. W@nker. F@ggot. Sp@stic. We werent aware that some people got offended by these words in a different way to how we meant.

To us they were all a way of saying 'you annoy me'. When you grow up not realising that then its hard to suddenly change and stop using them. I dont try not to say them anymore though.

To me the word f@ggot doesnt mean gay. Everyone has different meanings for particular words. When I say that word Im not using it in the gay context so Im going to keep using it. If it offends you then I urge you to stop being such a f@ggot about it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,044 ✭✭✭gcgirl

I'm gay and when someone says the F word I think of Brains ******'s, I don't really acknowledge the word so it doesn't annoy me.
