Rooks on the lawn

For the past ten days or so dozens of rooks and jackdaws have been busy on the lawn every morning, pulling out the underlying thatch and making holes all over the place in the soil, they are doing a great job , a job all the gardening books say I should be doing!
My question is what are they looking for? I'm assuming some type of larvae etc but I'm sure someone here will know.

The larva of crane flies (Daddy long legs) are emerging as adults and the grubs are rising to the surface having fed off your grass roots all year. The Rooks are doing you and your lawn a big favour.

Your right, they are, we're talking leatherjackets of course, thanks for that.
Other residents of the house have been instructed to disturb the rooks as little as possible!
Interestingly, the lawn is divided by the drive, on one side , where the rooks are was sown ,the other side was rollout and they are ignoring it completely..

I love rooks. At my house they grub under the moss on the roof and throw big pieces of moss onto the front and back paths. It sounds like someone trying to break in and was alarming until I realised what it was.
