Answer these questions for us so you can get the best possible machine. With that kind of budget you should really be going for an i5 and also the 7990 is very power hungry.

    1. What is your budget? [€xxx]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming/Video editing/3D Modelling/HTPC/Internet] (If gaming include which games)

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes/No]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.] (If possible state brand and model of the parts to ensure compatibility)

    5. Do you need a monitor? [Yes/No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes/No]

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? [In x days]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.]

If your not in a rush i would wait at least til the 25th of this month when there should be some info on new releases from AMD (due out around the end of October).

New graphics gonna bottleneck if you ain't got a processor :( , I'm currently on FX 6300 OC 4.1 stable .

The 8350 seemed like a good option (bang for buck )

If they finish the AM3+ line with the 9590 ill be disappointed

New generation CPU (steamroller) should be released before Christmas, they will run on AM3+.
    Not sure about pricing tho.
You won't see any difference between 6300 and 8350 in games. If you are playing CPU-bound games, try getting your 6300 to around 4.5Ghz instead. Neither of these CPUs will bottleneck single GPU.

You should be able to get 4.5Ghz on descent air, what is your current cooler?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 121 ✭✭martinburke

just a stock cooler with a 120 noctua (push) blowing at it.

    you think a 7990 would sit ok with a FX6300 at 4.5?

hyper evo 212 should get you to 4.5Ghz, it's also cheap and good investment over stock cooler.

At 4.6Ghz and over fx chips gets really hot, i'd suggest closed loop for that. Which one? I don't know, I am sceptical about loops and a sucker for air cooling, got silverarrow myself, love it.

    Yes.

Forgot to ask you, what motherboard are you using?

    Why get a 7990?

You could get a 4670k, a good sli capable board, a good cpu cooler and a pair of 7950's for the same price.

I dunno, 7990s going for 480 pounds on OCUK as recently as a few days ago, lemme check if they're still up. 7990 is definitely preferable to CF 7950s, better perf, less power consumption, less micro stutter.

7990 is almost half the price on Amazon , if prefer to buy the reference model somewhere else .

    I'd never pay $1000

I think the sapphire model is down to £590

I didn't realise you could get them that cheaply. That's a good deal.

Overclockers have been doing really good deals lately. I think it's part of their plans to expand and become more competitive on a more continental scale.

I can't find any info on how reliable this mobo is on higher clocks. Although regions of 4.2Ghz is not really considered high, I am not sure about 4.5Ghz since it's only a 4+1 power design. I mean it's possible, but not sure about stability... only one way to find out.

I'll probably hold off OC for a bit . I had it at 4.1 or a while ( permenant ) not turbo . Was grand . Had a few crashes so I put it back. Still crashed , turned out it was the graphics OC was too much .

You are not going to notice any difference between a FX 6300 and an 8350. They can both be overclocked to nearly the same frequencies. 8350 just has an extra two(8 in total) cores while the 6300 has six cores. Games don't use that many cores so you will not notice any difference.

Its like going from i5 from AMD. Games in the last year or two perform basically the same with the AMD processor on par or lacking behind by 5FPS. 8350 is waste of money if you allready have a FX6300

Do you think the 7990 is worth looking at then when the 8xxx series comes out i can see it drop again. basically i plan to have my 37" 3d tv as a second monitor and "Big Picture" when shes not watching tv. i just want something that will eat the next gen console until the end of its life span.

Will this be for a 1080p TV? Perhaps a 780/AMD's new equivalent in October would be a better choice. I don;t see 7990 dropping much mroe, they are dropping in price to sell them off more than anything else. The second hand market might be an option, though.
