Looking for advice on how to change bearings on Zipp 404 alloy rim clinchers. Around 2009 model i'd say - carbon cap on the ends of the hub

Would like to try and do it myself, so

    1. What tools do I need?
    2. What bearings do I need and best place to buy them?
    3. Any instruction / You Tube videos anyone found good?

    Any advice appreciated, thanks.

    You will need
    • 2 * 5 MM Allen key
    • Hammer
    • Pin Punch
    • Loctite (Blue 243 or equivalent)
    • Lubricant for freewheel, I use a small drop of A.T.F.
    • Cloths & de-greaser

Don't try to prise off the carbon cap !!! It's a water dust seal that can come off easily when the hub is dismantled. The hub dismantles by using the two Allen keys (the axle has a 5mm Hex at each end), One Allen Key each side and unscrew ;) EDIT: Take off the quick release first.

The bearings should come out pretty easily, if not a tap with the hammer and the pin punch from the opposite side of the hub should have them out. If you have a socket set select a socket that fits the OUTER race of the bearing to press it in if necessary. Don't put any pressure on the inner race !!

I use a small drop of loctite on the threads of the hub to stop it coming loose as this has happened on both the front and rear wheels. Don't go too mad reassembling/tightening the hub. Too tight and the bearings will not run free, too loose and there will be side to side play in the hub. I'm sure there is a recommended torque but with a little care and experimentation you should be able to get it right.

I've seen the bearings on E-bay. search for Zipp 404. I'm sure any half decent shop should be able to get them for you.

Hope this helps, any questions fire away !!
