I feel for Istanbul a bit, Tokyo was a bit of a safe choice and a bit soon after Beijing.

Doesnt affect Tokyo at all. Not enough to worry about, to live in, or to visit.

Well it was brought to the attention of the IOC when they had to make a decision...;)

of course they had to consider it. however the media put a massive bullshít spin and hype on the whole situation. The radiation levels in Tokyo, and their tap water, are probably less dangerous than the air quality of Beijing, LA, Mexico, and all other large cities.

Those words above is enough for anyone involved in an Olympic 2020 bid to be concerned about the matter so.;)

Nobody does tech like the Japanese.

Its probably the only reason I want it in Tokyo

    Opening Ceremony:

Helicopters lowering a fully operational Gundam/Jaegar piloted by Hideo Kojima into the stadium to the sound of a Holographic Tupac.

    Stunned worldwide audience. :D

Tokyo is one of the most fantastic cities I have ever visited in my life. It was practically unaffected by the 2011 earthquake, aside from a few swaying buildings and cracked pavements.

you'd not be too far off going by some of the stuff you'd see in Shinjuku or Akihabara ;)

Also, I predict Gackt will perform at the opening ceremony:

which would be an awesome show, 'cos I'd never seen someone ride into the stadium on horseback, with the full band also riding horses, onto the stage to then perform. Gackt is amazing :D

Rugby World Cup and Olympics back to back is enough of an excuse.

Glad to hear they've bagged the games.

I've been lucky enough to get to Tokyo & Nagoya on a handful of occasions & it's always delivered an absolutely exhilarating experience. It also feels inestimably more foreign than say Thailand or many other spots in SE Asia, to me anyhow.

Some of the craft beer in Japan is incredible, and even some of the common beers you'd get on draft are pretty great. Yebisu and asahi black are prett tasty.

Beer is insanely expensive in Japan if I remember correctly.

I didn't find it too bad when I was there, I thought it was more expensive in Norway and most places only had Ringnes

You go into one of the craft beer places and serving you is an art form, in itself. And Tokyo is just such an awesome city to experience but it can wear you out.

For cheaper beers and a more down to earth vibe, East Tokyo is worth checking out.

Disappointed that the Japanese government has decided to piss away billions that would have been better spent on Fukushima.

Id say there will be much more heat regarding Fukushima and its containment measures closer to the time. It unavoidable really. Maybe itll give tepco or whoever it is that is supposed to be dealing with the kick up the arse they seem to need.

34 posts into an Olympic thread, and we are already getting advice on where to go for a beer. Only on an Irish forum :D

I get what you're saying but every time I go over there, I still find myself being amazed.

And every port of call has something to gasp about. Even London, which I find myself occasionally jaded with, surprised me last Summer with it's take on the Olympics.

Getting back to the beers thing. If you're not into the whole craft thing, you could always check out one of the various Dubliners chain in Tokyo. Good craic...

I was going to add Paddy Foley's but that's sadly closed :(

There's plenty of arguments of why any of the candidate cities shouldn't have got it, which are going to be played up about even Tokyo. Fukushima etc.

Personally, I feel common sense prevailed at the IOC. :D

Nooooope! I always try to avoid Irish pubs while in other countries. can't see the point of going to another country and going somewhere just like you'd find at home. besides, I had a Guinness in Osaka that was really awful, wouldn't recommend it.

if you want to go somewhere really special, I'd recommend Gonpachi in Roppongi AKA the "Kill Bill" Restaurant :D

When in Japan, I visit a lot of local pubs from the big cities to the small islands. The Irish pub thing is an in joke between me and the missus; we do it all over the world. Sometimes the "Irish" pubs are so far removed from "Irish", it's worth the price of the pint alone :D

Best one we visited in was Tadgh's in Kyoto. Lovely craft beers, nice atmosphere and little to none of the bric & brac that features in so many other "Irish" bars.

I missed the best sex I never had for the curling match between Britain and Japan in Nagoya on Feb 12 1998.

    I hope there isn't a repeat performance.

The beer, the steak and the whiskey are all amazing in Japan. Avoid the local lager and you'll be sorted. The food tends to be incredible.

There's a wealth of local lagers - the craft brews, for starters. The popular lagers aren't bad at all, Kirin, Yebisu, Asahi, Orion, Sapporo.

I'd avoid the imported stuff - apart from the Guinness/cider or Guinness/lager mixes (expensive but you won't need too many of them) :D

Lots of towns utterly destroyed after the tsunami. Wonder how they can justify this. Not sure how the Spanish thought they could of afforded it either.
Been to Istanbul, wouldn't fancy it there, cant walk 2 yards without someone trying to drag you into their restaurant or sell you a carpet.

Tokyo's a good distance from the affected area, tbh. I think it will give the country a much needed morale boost after the catastrophe.

I think, similarly to how I said the Olympics might help to highlight the Fukushima issue, it may also help to bring the plight of those back into the spotlight again. Theres nothing the media likes to do more than point on where governments have spend billions on frivolous articles while its people suffer daily.
