Has anyone been charged the full price at Aldi for anything that has a 30% reduced label on ?
Every time we go , they say it is just an error but it is happening so often now it makes me wonder. A friend of my wife's says it happens to her as well. I can imagine people saying check yourself, but the speed your shopping is thrown at you it's next to impossible, it only can be checked when you get the receipt. The manager at our local store said to put everything reduced at the front, makes no difference.
Never happens at Lidl , incidentally.

Maybe the label is harder to see if it is 30% reduced?

I didn't know Aldi sold items with a 30% discount, I've never seen any. It's so cheap already without discounts.

The scanner probably isn't reading the discounted label, or the database hasn't been updated. I doubt they're deliberately trying to scam you, they just have minimal staff rostered.

Have to say I've never encountered overcharging in Aldi when I bought 30% off stuff. Why dont you keep all your 30% stuff together so its easier to check.

Aldi is divided geographically into two entities, Nord and sud that's the brothers bit. Aldi is the Albrecht concern - Albrecht Discount - hence Aldi, Lidl is a totally seperate company.

You mentioned the brother from Lidl.

In Aldi, the 30% reduced is marked by a red sticker about 4cm in diameter, this is not scanned, it has to be noted manually & a button pressed. In Dunnes & Tesco it is done by bar code.
If no one else has noticed then the staff at my local must just need more training & maybe slow down a bit.

Lidl had a smaller sub shop in Santry called Bargain Base.

It has since closesd as all of the Lidl overstock and unsold stock was sold off through that shop.

It was a great place though.

A drill would cost you 50 euro in Lidl.

4-5 weeks later in Bargain Base you would get if for half price...25 euro.

The amount of bargains I got in Bargain Base was unreal.

The quality in Aldi is much higher, don't know about prices because I never shop in Lidl anymore, but I have heard their bakery is good.

Yes but no apparently. The other way around

Aldi North and Aldi South founded by 2 Albrecht brothers.

Aldi Sud by Karl Albrecht - Germanys richest man
Aldi Nord by Theo (RIP) sons Berthold Albrecht (RIP) and Theo Jr Albrecht

    Lidl owned by Dieter Schwarz

Aldi Sud is the one we have here

Lidl is the last name of Ludwig Lidl, a retired teacher. In 1930, Josef Schwarz became a partner in Südfrüchte Grosshandel Lidl & Co., a fruit wholesaler, and he developed the company into a general food wholesaler. In 1977, under his son Dieter Schwarz, Lidl&Schwarz began to focus on discount markets, larger supermarkets, and cash and carry wholesale markets. The first Lidl discount store was opened in 1973, copying the Aldi model.

In 1946, the Albrecht brothers took over their mother’s small shop and soon opened another retail outlet nearby. By 1950, the Albrecht brothers owned 13 stores in the Ruhr Valley.

When the brothers split the company in 1960 over a dispute whether they should sell cigarettes at the till, they owned 300 shops with a cash flow of DM90 million yearly. In 1962, they introduced the name Aldi—short for Albrecht-Diskount. Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have been financially and legally separate since 1966. The Aldi stores in Ireland are Aldi Sud.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

If you believe your being ripped off, you've brought it up with management and it's still happening shouldn't you just stop shopping there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 959 ✭✭✭maringo

I've been shopping at Lidl and Aldi since they opened. Have NEVER been overcharged in either of them. Can't say the same about Tesco, Supervalu, Woodies. Have been overcharged in all these but now I check my receipt before I leave the shop. It's BUYER BEWARE and check before you leave the shop. I try to do that although with a big shop it can be a bit of a hassle.
