Burns vs Beltran + Undercard

Big test for Ricky Burns tonight against US based Mexican Raymundo Beltran.
Beltran is on a good run at the moment with recent victories over highly ranked Hank Lundy and dangerous South Korean Ji-Hoon Kim.
Meanwhile Burns after being impressive of late with wins vs Katsidis, Moses and Mitchell, was made to look very ordinary last time out vs Chelo Gonzalez, potentially losing the first 6 rounds of that fight before Gonzalez faded and eventually quit on his stool.

No one really knows how good Gonzalez is/was, and to an extent many aren't certain about how good Burns really is. Whether his recent wins were a mirage and he's not the genuine article, or merely last time out was a bad outing, and Gonzalez was much better than thought, either way we'll likely get our answer tonight.
Beltran is very dangerous, he can box from the outside or apply pressure and bang inside and it's the latter he's probably better at ad what his tactics will be tonight. He's extremely tough and will keep coming forward all night if allowed, a serious test of Burns ability.

Undercard has a few interesting fights, the one that stands out is Steve Simmons, 8-0 Scottish Cruiserweight prospect, taking on 10-0 German prospect David Graf. One of Matchroom's highly promoted prospects Scott Cardle takes on Gary Fox (11-1) who's very very tough and can bang a bit despite his record, although is very crude.
Also highly touted Liverpool prospect Callum Smith faces tough journeyman Kirill Psonko and a return for former British Featherweight champion Paul Appleby.

Should be a good nights action.
    Prediction: Burns UD.

This is turning into a very good fight.

    That was no knockdown!

The commentators were so embarrassingly biased during that phantom knockdown and subsequent replays "We got the wrong replay" and "looking unsteady on his feet from the knockdown". Good fight though!

Hate the booing, seems much more prevalent in these islands. Support the hometown guy by all means, but respect the other bloke...

Great respect to the national anthem

Burns already looking much sharper than last time out.

This is warming up very nicely. Beltran coming into it strongly.

Burns looking off the pace here, doesn't look confident at all

Kamikaze stuff from burns, tough nut though...

Looks like Burns title is slipping away. Would need to win both rounds and score a knockdown to get a draw on my card :o

    Too brave.

Not seeing bravery in Burns performance tonight, goes into his shell everytime the pressure is on and should have a point deducted for holding. Like the Gonzalez fight he hasn't got started at all

All over the place. Beltran is landing left hooks without thinking. Burns needs a ko

Yeah when I said brave I meant getting up of the canvas and keeping his hands low. He was ****e though

Burns certainly did not win that.

    Draw.?
    Burns you very lucky man.

Shocking decision, the reaction of the home crowd tells it all

WTF. One judge there might have a sight problem. Fair play to jim watt calling it for what it is. A dirty sport where money speaks.

    this sport sickens me sometimes.

no way on this earth did Burns deserve anything from that fight.

I feel for Beltran. he should be world champion after that.

    pathetic.

and everyone in that ring, as well as everyone in the crowd, knows it.

    What a farce

I always put small cover bets on the draw at big odds, so I'm happy in that respect, but I thought Beltran won narrowly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

Despicable. It wasn't even the home judge that gave it. Very very very dodgy decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭ebbsy

I d'ont think Burns even believed it himself, to be fair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,999 ✭✭✭Big Ears

Ya very bad decision, Burns is a lucky man.
Burns won the 1st, the 2nd and 3rd could of gone either way, as could the 6th and the 7th and 12th were Burns rounds with everything else to Beltran.
So that's a maximum of 6 rounds to Burns and even then he wouldn't get the draw due to the knockdown.

I had it 115-112 Beltran btw, and I'm a big fan of Burns.

    Burns can barely talk here...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,466 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

115-112 for Burns is literally impossible for anyone who watched that fight.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 433 ✭✭heyheyhey1982

Complete bollox. Burns thinks he deserves it for a broken jaw. That's means nothing. Beltran won.

It wasn't close. These pundits are ****ing lyers.

    Absolute disgrace

    that's a brilliant post-match interview by Beltran.

"I am the champion. That belt is mine."

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,658 ✭✭✭Halloween Jack

Beltran seems like a top man. Any justice and he gets a rematch.

Hard to see where burns goes from here... He obviously can't go in with a live opponent...

Admirable to stay in there when he was badly hurt but you don't get points for that.

Sky pushing that as an excuse for the decision is pretty poor alright.

Even Stevie Wonder wouldn't have scored that fight 115-112 to Burns

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭sydneybound

****ing farce, that judge who gave 115-112 to Burns needs his ****ing head examined. Nights like this give boxing a terrible reputation.

Beltran, class interview, you deserve so much more.

This sport is dirty. I hope Canelo seen this tonight and thinks about next week. To leave with the belt you need to knock the champion out.

was a home town decision all right burns well hammered there

Brother just told me about this, he backed Beltran before the fight at 7/2. Having watched the fight he thought he was on a home and hosed winner, joke!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,351 ✭✭✭djhaxman

Having seen only bits and pieces of Burns career before his last 2 fights I'm wondering is he even that good.

Twice now he's been very fortunate to hold onto his title.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 882 ✭✭✭moneymad

I used to watch boxing every week and come in here and have a laugh. Now remember why i don't do that anymore. Boxing is a dirty business full of scoundrels. Beltran is a class act.

Pics of burns' jaw doing the rounds on twitter, clean break, astonishing that he finished the fight. He's got plenty of fight at least...

Its no wonder why boxing is going to the dogs.

It was a great interview. When watching the 12th round I was thinking, if they rob Beltran I've no sympathy for him, because you can't just give away a round like that late in the fight when you know you're gonna be up against it to win a decision.
Then after the interview I did feel quite sorry for him, but at the same time personal responsibility comes into it. Yes they shouldn't have robbed him, but how could he have avoided this, what could he have done more.
Sometimes a fighter goes into a fight knowing he needs to get the stoppage to win, all Beltran had to do was take the 12th. Of course he didn't know that, but he's been robbed before and he clearly understands how boxing works and should have known that there's no point taking chances on away soil.

So while the judges definitely ****ed up (not one of 44 press side scorers didn't have the fight for Beltran), from his own point of view he's still got himself to blame......he could of done more.
