Anyone know anything about pony racing in Ireland. Have a young 11yo fella looking to get experience riding in them.

Is there much rules rules and regulations, would it be expensive, racing saddles, lead clothes, silks etc,has ponies to have passports, microchips etc?

Seems to be more info about the English pony racing scene on google.

All horses and ponies have to be microhipped and have passports, now, so that would need to be in order. Safety standards will, of course, be implemented, and correct helmets, boots, back protectors, saddles, etc. will be required.

There are weekly reports from pony racing in the Irish Field, which comes out on a Saturday, so that should provide you with some info.

A quick google also shows up some results which may prove a useful starting point. Here's a few examples:

Most of these sites have contact details, so someone should be able to give you some information or tell you who to get in touch with.

Thanks Convert, seems like we need to brush up on our google skills.

Cheapest way to go I suppose is to try and get him spare rides if that is possible, was up at RACE the other day and they were saying its a good start for him.

Do you know what is the most suitable type of pony they use or can we wander in with any little hack?.

Most of the "ponies" used in pony racing are small TBs who didn't grow enough to make the track.

My advice would be to go to a few races, see what it's like, try and chat to a few people, or arrange to meet a few of the organisers of the meeting (see the websites for dates and contact details) and see what their advice would be.

Only the first couple of races are small the pony race, 14 hands, 14 2 and 15 hands then there are 3-5 races open which are racehorses off the track and just diverted to pony racing. I would say go racing next summer it's not easy to get rides as there are a good few jockeys in the pot. It always helps if you buy your own horse for your son to ride and if he is any use then more will use him. But your own horses gurantees you a ride every Sunday. Hacks are no use here plenty of the horses used in pony racing would win on the track for various reasons they are sent pony racing. More often and not its cheaper than racing. A hack would be utterly no use. Your honestly talking for the open horse races a horse between 50-70 OR. The smaller pony races its quite tricky to find something fast enough for them. Ronan Coleman is your man to talk to. I think his with the midland pony racing and he has a website Irish Horse and Pony Racing .com and there are few videos of Dingle 2013 on YouTube.
