I think you only need to install internet security as this has the virus checker in it.

    Correct, I think.

I suppose the AV could be used stand-alone if you use a different firewall.

Thanks but i find that comodo A/V beats everything around & its free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,704 ✭✭✭Doylers

Thanks OP, I installed the antivirus and that went fine but It said there was no firewall active and I needed to upgrade. So I launched the internet security version installer and that upgraded my version so everything is going now :D:D

Not a fan of avg at all. Obviously not a bad shout seeing that it's free but avg is a complete pain in the ass in general. Security essentials is the best general use anti virus IMO.

Just so everyone knows there is a massive difference between antivirus and internet security. The antivirus will protect you from less than 50% of online threats where Internet security would protect you from 85-99% of online threats. Antivirus only protects your computer, Internet Security also protects things like your personal and banking information and from scam websites.

Thanks OP, only this morning I had to uninstall avast as it was causing issues on my pc so I came on to boards to look at reviews of alternatives and came on your post - nice timing! :D

Avira will annoy the absolute crap out of you with notifications and ads for the full version. If you're not prepared to pay you won't get a ful security package anyway. For free then avast is the best performing. I personally use panda cloud over avast these days because its less of a resource hog and I don't get false positives with things like hex editors, keygens etc. I run a housecall scan and malwarebytes every month too. For really dodgy downloads virustotal is a good idea too.

Not under normal usage but I work with a lot of enormous archives of websites and code and it would cause a lot of disk trashing whatever their scanning algorithm was.

Why is this free? I shouldn't question it, but I must.

My free year is expiring in a month - has anyone any recommendations on whether to pay to keep it on or go with an alternative? Offer is $19.99 for the year to keep it on.

AVG is a bloated POS that will slow your computer. A much better option is Norton Internet Security which has much improved, is very light, has better detection rates and very good support, you can get a legit serial on EBay for €13

Wow. A couple of years ago people were recommending the opposite for the same reasons.

Yes, and I was one of those who once upon a time called Norton a virus, made a nice few quid removing it and giving people a nice speed upgrade. It's now the best AV IMO. The Norton family shield is also what I'd recommend to anyone with children, completely lock down what they can access on their own devices and get notified when they try what they shouldn't

Nice one, perfect timing! I've just had to remove Avast from my home laptop as it kept crashing Explorer so was on the lookout for an alternative.

It was a promo back then, I think it was to reassure the Tinfoil hat brigade after the rumours.
Then it came out that Google, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft were doing the same thing for years (but much worse) without a quarter of the attention..

    Hmmm....
