Hi, I'm looking to get a VW Golf between 05-09. Anyone know what are the differences between a sport-line and a comfort-line variant ? Thanks

Different alloys between the two, the sport has spot lights and has colour coded door handles, maybe im wrong about the colour coded bit though?

Comfort line has auto dimming rear view mirror and auto lights and stuff.

Sportline - 16" alloy wheels, full colour coded exterior trim, lowered sports suspension, sport seats.

Comfortline - 15" alloy wheels, auto sensing lights and wipers, auto dipping rear view mirror, comfort seats and rear centre arm rest.

    Comfortline also has cruise control.

Does the Sportline really have lowered sports suspension, even on the bog standard 1.4? I'd be amazed if it did...

Ford offered a similar lowered suspension setup in their Focus Zetec models.

Was that offered in the 1.4 base models (or should that be the 1.0 base models now..)

It was on the MkI and MkII, not sure about the MkIII.

Everyone likes the comfort seats on our 06 comfortline. Im not sure what the seats are like on base or sportline as the auto we bought only came in comfort at the time. The seats on base in the mk4 are fairly austere in comparison. The dimming rear mirror is a bit of a gimmick as are the auto lights and wipers but the cruise control is needed. However this can be retrofitted for about 100 euros. The ride is a bit fidgety and tiring on its stock alloys as is compared to a 08 passat , I wouldnt want larger wheels or lowering tbh.

    The lower is barely noticeable.

I remember when the father was buying his Passat back in 06 there was a Comfortline and a Sportsline parked beside eachother and you could barely notice it.

The Sportline is probably a nicer car if you're younger, the Comfortline has the other extra's as mentioned. Just really depends on what you want from the car.

I prefer the lowering and the bigger wheels but the ride in the MK5 is more tiring on long journeys than a base mkiv golf 1.4 or a passat 2008 tdi which is very comfy even if the handling is dodgy to say the least which is a great rep mobile and mile muncher. (Cant have it all I suppose)
Thats why I think an extra inch on the wheels and even a little lowering would make something thats bad worse.

So the comfortline has the stuff thats standard on every other car:rolleyes:

They weren't standard on that class of car back then and probably not even now.

It pretty much was on my 98 pug, 01 citroen and 08 alfa.
Its one of the many reasons ill never buy a vw/skoda.

What 98 pug did you have?

406 (i presume the same stuff was on the 306 etc though)
Sorry for the OT, it annoys me that vw/skoda get away with charging for stuff that is standard elsewhere.

Classes above. To get those in other cars at the same time you had to buy a Focus Ghia, Astra Design or Octavia Elegance. All top specs. Even these days things aren't much better, the smaller cars just don't have these things as standard unless you're prepared to pay for it either as an extra or in spec level.

    Think it was a GLI

Fair enough, (and ill grant youthe pug was top spec but it was still a 98 car) but you get my point, my parents have a 12 yeti that didnt even have mats as standard, whereas my bog standard 01 citroen had all the stuff vw offer in their packs as standard.
Why people accept this (and shorter warrenties from german marques) is beyond me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It's not just German stuff though, the likes of the Auris, Corolla don't have them or air con as standard for that matter. Renault don't fit them to the bog standard Megane either.

As stated its the tier two manufacturers (in theory only) that have no option but to fit the kit as standard.
VAG , Mercedes, Bmw charge what they like for stuff and seem to get it. I was looking at a new A5 and by the time I had the options the car needed and expected of something that cost 40+grand like Sat Nav, Metallic etc I think it was 4 grand which is what my current car is worth! I said thanks but no thanks. It would still have had many compromises I wasnt happy with- no quattro (another 3 grand?), down on power (2l tdi) and getting on being a 5 year old model with a dating interior.

I had a mk6 golf last year and found the "comfort" seats to be incredibly uncomfortable. The worst seats I've ever sat on in a car actually. It was one of the main reasons I traded the car in for another marque. I couldn't get a comfortable driving position no matter how many times I tried. Word of warning.

I would be fairly sure that would be you, rather than the seats, at fault.
