Claiming back on paid Uni Tuition Fees

My brother just finished his PDE course in Maynooth. As he did the course after his M.A., there was no chance of fees paid, so I paid the fees for him. The fees amounted to €6,121.

I was wondering....back when I did the course, my Dad managed to do something with his tax (I think) whereby he paid my fees (roughly the same) and got a chunk back a while later. That's not an option right now (neither to claim back via my Dad or even to ask how he did it). So I'm looking about how to go about trying to get some of that money back, if it's at all possible.

Because I think it will impact how I go bout it, worth pointing out I'm also unemployed for the last 16 months, and haven't worked since I paid any of the fees (Hence why I'd quite like to know if there's any chance of getting some of the money back).

I dida quick google search and found...

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it31.html

...and it seems to have a form to fill in and send off to them. Will my unemployment affect the claim? When would I actually get the money if at all? I also don't see where it's meant to be sent to, or what else needs to go with the form. I have the receipt from the Uni, saying it was paid.

Sorry if it's obvious or I''m asking stupid questions. I don't really know a huge amount about this.

In order to get any refunds of tax you need to have paid tax. So if you paid tax in 2012 when you paid the fees then complete the form and send it to your local tax office (available on the website). Revenue will determine if any refund is due based on your income, tax paid and credits/reliefs claimed in 2012.

As above - you have to have paid tax in the year that you paid the funds (which I assume you were as obviously a lot of money to pay!) I'm not sure about paying for a relative's fees apart from son/daughter but it's worth a try.

Print off the form, complete it and attach receipt. Send off to your local Revenue Office - details online. If it's legit, you'll get your refund very quickly, I got mine back less than ten days after submitting last month.
