Hi - I have a fluorsecent lamp that has a through switch on it, switch has broken. Wire is 2 core. My wife bought a through switch at the hardware but its a 3 core switch. Is it ok to use this switch, wire it as it says, but leaving the earth not connected?

Sorry for whats probaby a v basic question for those who know these things!

Sounds like your switch that broke was a one way switch? a cable connection on top and bottom?

The switch you bought has one connection on top and two connections on the bottom? If this is the case it is most likely a two way switch. So yes you should be fine.

If its a plastic switch is probably wont want have an earth terminal.

Post pictures if you can just so we can confirm what we are looking at.
