I was just wondering if you could help me out. I did one year of a level 7 course but didnt succeed in my exams and said I'd repeat the year but didnt. I do have a genuine case as to what happened. Would I have a case with appealing my fee €7606.

When was this? if it was more than 5 years ago they might let you be designated as a "second chance student"

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Hate to put a downer on you but I don't see the point in appealing, hundreds more like you are in the same boat each year and they wont budge because they aren't allowed.

Honestly the best and most common solution is to take a credit union loan or bank loan for them this year and notch it down as a lesson learned work to pay it off , if you don't do this then you will have to wait at least 2 years to go as a 2nd chance student with no guarantee they wont stop this in the meantime.

Ah yes hundreds probably are. But what about genuine cases then what happens there? They couldn't say no to everyone?

Unless you can tell me why your a genuine case then I cant help you any further, but the first thing that strikes me is that you were there and sat exams therefore in their eyes you were there the full term.

I had a stillbirth and I didn't feel great after it...
Could go either way - just hoping it works out. Stressed out and don't know if I go in like everyone else or where do I go next..

I am very sorry to hear that, I do honestly hope the college take a sympathetic stance, some of the questions they may ask would be did you inform anyone in the college at the time that you were having a medical issue ?

But to be honest I would be prepared for the worst, which would be you paying your fees for first year. That's not the end of the world, yes you would need to get into a little debt to do it, but many students need to do it for various reasons.

The main reason I am not too positive on your outcome is that in their eyes, and the governments eyes you were there for the year and sat exams at the end. Their argument may be that you should of informed them of any issues and they may of been able to organise an alternative then.

At the end of the day you need to talk to the finance/fees office in the college they are the only ones who can answer you, best of luck.

Thank for your information. I Think I am preparing myself for the worst now.. Hopefully if it comes to it il have to take out a loan, if I can get one. It probably will bring up too many sad memories to go threw it... Oh god.. Thanks again ..

Pick a different college and start again.

Look the worst isn't that bad, I know many people who have to take out a loan to cover a repeat year, and make it their business to work their asses off during the summer, and doing some part time work during the year if they can.

Sorry to hear the situation that led to the fee liability. You may have grounds for appeal if you made efforts at the time to inform the college of your bereavement and took a leave of absence as a result. I'd go speak to a counsellor or chaplain in the college about how you might go about that.

    Probably not an option
