So, I've been on here enquiring about North America, Africa and South America and now eventually we've settled on Thailand/Vietnam/Laos!

We aim to head to for 4weeks; the plan is to chill for a few days, travel for 2 1/2 wks and chill again at the end before we come home.

I've been through loads of threads on here but a lot are mainly about getting as much in as possible, whereas we want to do a bit, but kind of embrace the culture and chill a bit as well. We're well aware that we're not going to be able to get everything in and we're totally ok with that!

We'd like to stay in fairly nice places and spend roughly 5-7k, roughly!

If anyone has done anything similar or has any recommendations, they would be greatly appreciated!

Big thanks to all the folks that helped with regards to the previous destinations!!

    5-7K !! wow ...

I went to Thailand for 19 days and spent €600- that was going out, eating, drinking, shopping, travelling and having an a/c room to my self.

My favourite place was Chiang Mai , its a great city and can be got to leaving Laos. Its also close to Pai if you want the chilled hipppy vibe for a few days

I don't have a clue to be honest!! Just looking to get the best experience we can for the duration. Not getting any younger and want to get as much travelling in before the...ahem... Bambinos...

Will definitely check Chiangmai Mai out. Totally lost to be honest, I just don't want to spend the majority of our time travelling as opposed to enjoying ourselves!! It's the balance I'm aiming for!

If your budget is 5-7k just pick 5 or 6 places and fly between them.

Ya, with regards to time restrictions, this seems to be the best bet.

Got a bit of an itinerary going: Fly into BK, heard north to the jungle, into Laos, across to North Vietnam, down along the coast, fly to Phuket and go to Phi Phi and the islands from there; then back to BK to fly home. Obviously, it's a bit vague, but the better-half's sister has been there previously and has outlined some key spots for us.

We've kind of given ourselves 5 weeks at this stage; cut back a bit on accomadation and spend more on the experience, so to speak.

Personally, Ha Long Bay is one of the key destinations, along with Phi Phi.. all we need now is the cash!!

Ha Long Bay has awful weather from Jan to late April mostly.

Hi again, Vietnam fly into Hanoi for halong bay when done fly down to danang for hoi an then night train to nha trang few days beach then fly to hcmc, this is main tourist traps in Vietnam.
Book your flights early with Vietnam airlines as they have super saver rates.
We usually go to nha trang for 6/8 weeks a year and use as a base, we pay $13/$15 a night for hotel room with all the trimmings. You'll pay upto €30 a night in Hanoi and hcmc for ok decent rooms. Hotels are way cheaper and better quality in Vietnam compared to Thailand.
Thailand is not a cheap country any more very very commercialised, great beaches but over priced hotels food and beer and transport esp tuktuks. Don't forget to sort out visa for Vietnam ... The cheapest way is voa have a look at myvietnamvisa.com we never had ant trouble with this company .... Enjoy
Also we only send around €2200 for the time were there for two people its up to you if you want to spend more as a lot of people eat/drink in western places which charge twice even three times than a local place.

Typhoons are likely but youd need to get very unlucky for one to really delay or affect your Ha Long Bay trip.

Typhoon warnings shut the bay to boats regularly during july, but its usually from a few hours to a day or two so its not the end of the world.

    Cheers mate!!

Very aware of Thailand being a lot more commercial than Vietnam and we only plan on staying in Bk for a few days and then head north. I am looking forward to Phi phi, but we've been advised not to even bother Phuket.
Could you recommend some of your usual hotels/ guest houses in different areas? Also, any hidden gems to be aware of? And lastly, €2200 for 6-8 weeks? Nice.. I'd be like you to be honest when it comes to eating and drinking abroad, we'd try to hit as many of the local haunts as we can.

Sorry for all the questions by the way, but your help is greatly appreciated!!

I think that's the kind of trip I'd have done in retrospect. We did the 4 SE Asian countries in the 4 weeks we were there, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Should've left out Cambodia. As much as I liked it, we were just wrecked at that stage and would've loved to have spent those extra days somewhere like Sapa or Chiang Mai.

If you're going to Hanoi/Halong Bay I would recommend giving some time to Sapa. It's such amazing scenery. We really loved all the walks/hikes around the villages and rice fields.
Would recommend Indochina Junks for the Halong Bay cruise. They take a less touristy route and include kayaks as part of the trip.
Missed on out South Vietnam unfortunately.
Went to Koh Phi Phi though. Stayed at the Phi Phi Island Village resort. It's a bit far from the main town and more expensive. It's paradise though. Just relaxed and enjoyed the sun for 4 days. The resort restaurants are expensive. If you want a couples' luxury retreat, it's perfect for that. Otherwise, something in the town would be more appropriate.

Cheers Gatica! It's only from reading people's opinions on here and out and about that we've decide to cut down on the actual travel because, as you stated, we'd just be wrecked!!

Thanks for the recommendations! Love the idea of kayaking through Ha Long Bay! The big tourist spots aren't really what we're going for, obvioulsy, when you're in a place like BK they can be hard to avoid, and sure, we'll have a bit of craic, but more so going for the culture and the sites. Really looking forward to it now to be honest, can't book the flights yet because of the 330 day rule, or something along those lines.. On that note, who did everyone fly with? As aforementionmed, we'll be flying in and out of BK so any recommendations for flights or sites are extremely welcome!! We've been looking at skyscanner.com for roughly the same dates (Leaving 8/9 - 7 - 14; returning 13/14 - 8 - 14) and they're coming in around €850 return, which I think is fairly reasonable..What do you reckon??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,301 ✭✭✭Gatica

Also use skyscanner quite a lot for finding best rates.
I guess flight costs depend on the dates. We got flights Sept/Oct last year for 670 return with Emirates through Dubai. Were happy with the airline and the service, would recommend them no bother.
I think KLM was the other one in the same range of prices at the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭80s Child

€670 is excellent! Flying during the summer will increase the costs a bit I suppose. I think we paid €640 this summer for Dublin direct to Dubai, but only booked them a few months before. Hopefully, given the fact that we'll book asap, we'll get the best deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭80s Child

So, Turkish airlines: €770 return per person for our dates
Lufthansa: €794 ( considerable shorter stop over on the way back)
Aer Lingus + China Airlines: €796 (Again, shorter stop over than Tuskish)

    Any experience of these airlines?

Am i better to pay a little more for security or are they all the basically the same??

Should I wait a bit longer for a sale??

    Questions, questions....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,178 ✭✭✭killbillvol2

Turkish are very good so take the price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

You mentioned Halong bay and Phi Phi being in the top of your to do list. Phi Phi is absolutely brilliant, great night life, lovely beaches and good diving (if you're into it). There and Chang Man were my fave pays off Thailand.

Halong bay is a great place to see but if I were you I wouldn't be looking to spend too much time there. You'll see online some places charging roughly 250 quid for a two day trip. If you book this while in Hanoi it'll cost a lot less with a small bit of shopping around. You could do a one day trip from Hanoi (personally I'd say it's long enough but I'm sure others may disagree with me) for around 40 dollars each all in.

My fave places in Vietnam were Sapa and Hoi An. With your budget you could stay in the nicest hotel in Sapa (Victoria hotel) and get their fancy train carriage there from Hanoi. Their carriage is reserved for their guests. The train is called the Victoria express. Really couldn't recommend Sapa enough, both myself and my gf loved it

Oh and as a previous poster mentioned typhoons, I don't think they're all that common. We had to delay our trip to Cat Ba (Halong bay) by a day because of one but in the following 3 weeks we heard nothing about any, we also met plenty of people that visited Halong bay over the month we were there and we were the only unfortunates that got a slight delay!

And on Cambodia, it's worth visiting for Siem Reap alone. I would be the most cultured fella butane of the temples there really are absolutely amazing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭80s Child

Cheers Graham and Killbill, much appreciated.

The flights have actually come down to 732e return with below 3hr stop overs both ways!

Thinking of booking it today.. can't wait!!

Hearing a lot of good things about Phi phi and thnking of getting my beginner diving cert before I go to take advantage of the elements rhat are available.

To be honest, I'm a bit like a child with the excitement!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭Theresalwaysone

Graham, its not that they are common in the bay but that the viet port authoroties freak out at any sign and are way over cautious.

I lived in Ha Long Bay for 9 months running tours and the tours were frequently delayed for a few hours or cancelled or called back after leaving.

Its not a real problem most of the year but jan-apr fog causes issues (yet they have a law forcing the boat owners paint all the tourist boats white) and july-aug have typhoon warnings all the time.

About to book flights off tripair.com, redirected form skyscanner. Anyone know is this okay??

The Gibbon Experience In Laos (Huay Xai) is pretty cool. Its just over the border from North Thailand, few hours from Chang Mai. Ya get to spend 2 nights in the jungle looking for the elusive gibbons (dont think anyone ever sees the feckers!!) sleeping in tree houses etc....but the best bit is zip lining through the jungle a few hundred metres up...amazing views/experience.
Thought Luang Prabang was lovely too btw. Nice town with great night markets, pubs, accommodation (and a late night bowling alley!!) and the Kuang Si falls are only down the road too. Amazing spot.

That bowling alley is owned by a member of police and is the only place that serves drink late at night. Good aul corruption!

On the diving, open water is what you should have to be sure you can do some fun dives. We done the course in Thailand. Cost 9000 baht in Koh Tao, I think it was about 11000 to do it in Phi Phi. Even if you don't get to do it, there's a long tail boat trip you can take out to Mayia bay and they'll stop off in a few places for snorkeling. The water is incredibly clear and there'll be thousands of fish swimming around you! I had a video I made of it on YouTube but they took it down because of the song I used!

Cheers folks for all the help!

Booked the flights direct with Turkish Airlines and got them for €1300 return for 2 with max stop over of 2.5hrs..

Now, the planning begins! Gave ourselves 5 weeks in total, so hopefully we'll get a bit of everything without spending too much time travelling in between!

Any more suggestions or recommendations, throw them up and I'm sure if we don't get to do it, someone else will!!

Well folks, 6 months and I'm back to you all!!

So, i'm looking for a pretty special hotel for our arrival in Bangkok, somewhere that you leave thinking, 'Wow, that was unreal!!'; it's the first stop of our honeymoon so you know yourself! Budget, about €200 - €250 per night for three nights..
As always, your help is greatly appreciated! !

I doubt you will get many recommendations on here as most people's budget for 2 weeks would be €250 :p

But you could try the Shangri-la Hotel http://www.agoda.com/shangri-la-hotel-bangkok/hotel/bangkok-th.html?asq=K6u3PM57cnhUEInlew7CtIsS9HPmjB75uGsm2k6BMfRFxTPUN6Rh4cd%2fQXwIU97uINpTYHscXuS70Smj2dcYKY4QL3OP6JbmUfdaMSdLXwnvBJ1vJi0RZbglKXhRPNoozSIpDA898q%2f7f6rrRIqdP7bI6M2UhQeoptVp8UR0gEsumrAiceAXvwV2edZriGHh2hPbvSL6nEqKBjuGFjkt8mtzI3LycumkMqDSdo0%2b78s%3d&tyra=1|12 ,actually just look through Agoda yourself and read the reviews,so many to choose from.

We went to Banyan Tree's rooftop bar Vertigo. The hotel itself looked really beautiful and I imagine must've been really nice to stay in.

So I've pm'd mooseknuckle, but I thought I'd open this to the masses also; where is the best area to stay in Bangkok? We're looking for somewhere close to a good night scene/retaurants and close enough to the main transport network (the BTS i think??). cheers folks.. all suggestions/recommendations/experiences welcome..

You want to stay either on Sukhumvit (BTS, nightlife of all descriptions!) or on the river (best views, some great hotels). You're correct about the BTS/Skytrain. It's the best way to get around.

    Mooseknuckle & killbillvol2,
The Banyan Tree is coming up tops here with the better half and to be honest, I like the look of it myself!
How is it fixed location wise for the nightlife situation and public transport?

Scratch that... Shang Ri La is the winner...

I ordered it through one of the visa companies recommended on here and was super. Got it very quickly and no problems entering the country.

My problem is the specific dates.
Also, we're planning on Laos, but to be honest, we know nothing about it and at the minute, we're thinking of just going straight from Chiang Mai to Hanoi. Opinions on Laos specifically?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 Bowandarrow

Ya you need to have a good idea of your dates, just did this trip last yr. got bus from chiang mai to Laos border and got the slow boat down to Luang Prabang in Laos. Gorgeous town definitely a highlight of se asia. Spent about 4 days here then flew to Hanoi.

Ya we flew direct from Luang Prabang think it was vietnam airlines. Did a trip to waterfalls outside town you can climb right to the top of then not too difficult just slippy. Hired bikes for a day, there's a hilltop in town which has amazing views of the mekong at sunset, the tourists have probably ruined this but it was still amazing seein the monks out collecting alms at sunrise. If your not templed out after thailand there's loads more in Luang Prabang. I thought It was just a really pretty town with a nice vibe. Personally preferred it way more than chiang mai. If you have time don't miss Sapa north of Hanoi trekking here a lot better than chiang mai.

    So, the plan is:
4 Nights in Bk: fly to Chiang Mai on the last day.
3 Nights in Chiang Mai: fly to Luan Prabang
3 nights in Luan Prabang: fly to Hanoi
2 nights in Hanoi: train to Ha Long Bay
2 nights in Halong Bay: train back to Hanoi
1 night in Hanoi: night train to Sapa.
3 nights in Sapa: train back to Hanoi and fly to Da Nag
2 nights in Da Nag: train down to Nha Trang
3 nights in Nah Trang: train to Hcmc ( not sure if we can fly)
2 nights in Hcmc: fly to Siem Reap
3 night in Siem Reap (including a day trip to Phen Phenom): fly to Phuket
Now, we've 6 nights left at the end, where we'll probably spend st least 4 on the beaches at the end, so that leaves a few days to play with in between.

So Boardies, what do reckon? Am I planning too much into this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭Theresalwaysone

Just organise your Ha Long Bay tour in Hanoi and you'll be brought to the bay and back again. Dont get the train up, messy and pointless.

Also try fit Hoi An in. Be a shame to miss it for an extra night in Da Nang or Nha Trang.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,385 ✭✭✭Nerdlingr

Yeah, you gotta see Hoi An. Lovely little town, especially at night when the lights come on.

We did pretty much the same itinerary, but we had only 28 nights: just cut out the Da Nag to HCMC section, as we went straight to Siem Reap from Hanoi (we did Sapa then Halong Bay though).
From there we had 2 days in Bangkok followed by 4 at Koh Phi Phi via Phuket airport.
From our experience, as much as we loved seeing everything, by the time we got to Siem Reap we were fairly exhausted and run-down. I got a cold when we arrived there and then also had left-over sea-sickness symptoms from the Halong Bay cruise, which I think had more to do with the effects of anti-malaria medication as I was completely fine while on the boat - you can barely tell it's moving. We kept going for the last stretch, but almost felt like would've been happier to have spent those extra 3-4 days spread over the other destinations. You end up spending a lot of time packing/unpacking and going to/from airports.
Indochina Junks did a great 2 night cruise, they picked you up in Hanoi and dropped you off on the way back. I don't think I'd have wanted the extra hassle of getting transport out to the bay and then getting harassed by salespeople for cruises.

Ha Long City is a ****hole of the highest order. Getting there is annoying. Getting back is annoying and if you do want to get on a tour, trying to organise it from Ha Long is annoying. Avoid.

If you are determined to train/travel to Ha Long, then just get a bus/ferry to Cat Ba Island and organise your tour there. Much more tourist friendly.

Just finished three weeks in vietnam so for that part of the trip I'll throw in my two cents. Sapa was class and Halong bay is definitely worth a look. Like the posters said above, you'd be better off booking your halong bay tour from hanoi.

It's low season now so you should be able to negotiate a good price. We went with Oriental sails and found them very good.

Also as said above go to Hoi an, it's only about a half hour from the airport in danang. we didnt go to danang as we'd heard there wasnt much to see there. Hoi an would be a good place to chill for a few days. there's a couple of beaches only a few km outside the town and if you get there for a full moon the place looks class.

Didnt like Nha trang that much. Beaches v overcrowded and just didnt catch onto it that well but there are some nice spots for food and drinks.

Dalat was a cool town as well but might be hard to fit in on your itinerary. We did canyoning there which was a great laugh and not something we expected to be doing in vietnam!

Other than that enjoy the trip!

Meh Da Nang. It and Nha Trang are faceless Russian resort dominated beach towns. Good craic for a night I guess.

Hoi An is awesome though, the town at night is beautiful and there are some awesome tailors if you wanted to get some stuff made. Cua Dai beach is close. Cham Island as well. If you do go, be sure to stay in Saltwater Hostel. Lovely new place just opened.

Right, the idea that Da Nang and Nha Trang are seen this way, means they're off! We'll fly to Da Nang and head straight for Hoi An. Thanks for the input!

Also, I like the other recommendations with regards to Ha Long Bay, we will definitely book our trip from Hanoi.

Now, this frees up a few days, so is there anywhere you would highly recommend that we either stay longer at, or go to?

Thanks again folks, all this is extremely helpful!

Its a bit North of Hue. Back towards Hanoi from Da Nang and just outside Dong Hoi.

Theres the link. Whack em off a mail and they'll be more than helpful.

Re Visa's. All the same. Star Vietnam Visa, MyVietnamVisa whater. I think I used MyvietnamVisa initially. No issues. There may be cheaper around though.
