Anyone know is it at wll possible to make this trip by car, leaving Heathrow at 10.30-11.00am to make the 5.15pm ferry home. I won't need to stop and I would be aiming to be at the ferry for 4.30pm.

The M25 can be chronic there between Heathrow and the M1 so you'd want to check your traffic reports and plan your journey accordingly but you'd probably be looking at getting the M40 north.
Around Birmingham the M6Toll costs a few pounds but almost guarantees a speedy passage so will pay for itsself if its the difference in catching the ferry.
North of Birmingham you can go cross country on A roads or the slightly longer M6+M56
If the traffic is ok then the Motorway option is the only way to go. Both roads are very decent so you can do the 70mph(+10% tolerance) the whole way.

Anyhow, for the M40+M6toll+M6+M56 option, google reckons the 461km is do-able in 4 1/2 hours.
Thats assuming an average of about 100km/h or 62mph and no breaks, which is a fairly optimistic target, but with over an hour buffer on your side its more than possible if theres no major traffic jams.

Yeah I'd say it's probably doable. I've done it quicker a good few times, but it was always really to make the 2:30am boat, where traffic would obviously be lighter.

Yeh that would be handier. I can always get the later boat but it would be nice to get home earlier.

M40/M42/M6 toll and you can do it in four hours.

It could take six though, the M6 can be a bastard.
