Taxi Driver in 1970's in Dublin - Register Anywhere?

Hello, I hope I am posting this in the right area.

I do hope someone on here may be able to help me or point me in the right direction.

I am trying to locate a Taxi Driver who was operating in Dublin during the 1970's. Would there have been some kind of register then for taxi drivers that I could look up/any such records?

The Taxi Driver lived out near the Five Lamps to Clontarf area. I understand he owned his own taxi. Is it ok for me to put his name on here also?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Can't imagine you can name him here

You could try the Carriage Office in Dublin Castle. In the past they issued licences to drivers in Dublin so they may have the records archived somewhere. Bear in mind that Garda Records are not subject to FOI so they will probably need a very bona fide reason to even begin to dig his details out for you. In relation to plate ownership then what is now Dublin City Council issued them until 2006. Contact the Customer Services section of Wood Quay 01 222 2267 as a start. They were the section who dealt with issuing plates and changes to same so they may have older information archived. Unlike the Garda Carriage Office the FOI act covers them but you will still need a very good reason to get somebody's personal details, even if it was from years ago.

There is every chance that the driver has moved on or passed away at this stage so this may well come to nothing.

    Thank you LostyDublin

I very much appreciate all of the information you have supplied to me - it is invaluable.

I know that this person may have passed on but for me I've been waiting over 20 years to try and get information so anything would be a bonus :)

    Thanks again.

Try this, but it doesn't seem to be working a the moment: http://transportforireland.ie/taxi/check-if-a-taxi-driver-is-properly-licensed/

Try the residential section here: http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/ and check Dublin 1, 3 and 5. Of course, they may have moved in the last 20 years.

Victor, thank you for taking the info and taking the time to post.

I have actually found out some information from that link just yesterday which is a good start :)

From doing quite a bit of digging I haven't been able to find out if there was such a thing as a register of taxi plates/drivers in the 1970s - so if anyone has any information on that I'd be most grateful.

You might also try the various Taxi Unions.

You could also try the Irish Taxi Forum here:
    http://irishtaxi.org/forum/index.php

Might be some old timers around that can help point you in the right direction. However expect to get some abuse there, not a very nice forum.
