I think 'Keep her lit' does something similar to this and goes something like Lucan, Walkinstown, Dundrum, Sandyford. I used to cycle home this way (ish) from Dun Laoghaire (to Lucan) and the roads and traffic are generally ok with one or two exceptions.

Here's the route to which irishmotorist refers.

Although it's pretty direct (about 20-22km, depending on your start and finish points), there can be lots of stopping and starting. So most mornings I prefer to go due east on the N4, hop onto the South Circular Road at Kilmainham, scoot along the canal and head south on the N11. That route is a few km longer but generally allows for a better rate of progress, though the canal section is pretty busy now that the schools are back.

The N4 and N11 sections may not offer the most comfortable cycling experience if you're just starting out, in which case the shorter route might be a better choice initially.

I'm less keen on the N11/N4 route for the return journey. So instead, I often follow the shorter route from Sandyford as far as Templeogue Village, at which point I turn left onto the N81, go past Tallaght and then right onto the new(-ish) Outer Ring Road which takes you back to Lucan. If you're lucky with the lights, you can get a good long run on that route without needing to stop.

Good luck and enjoy the spin!

I do the above route that Keep_Her_Lit links to. Early morning its not too bad with the start/stop. Evening is worse.

If you do go that route be carefully at the Walkinstown Roundabout

I go via the Outer Ring Road to Firhouse, Knocklyon, Ballinteer, then along the road beside the M50. Less stopping and starting.
